Speculation and rumors have gone crazy since it was officially announced that J.J Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan would be taking over the Episode VII script writing duties from Michael Arndt. Many believed that there was a lot of drama going on behind the scenes and that Abrams and Kasdan were re-writing the script from scratch. Today we have word directly from J.J Abrams, via Deadline, on why the writer change took place. While in a media conference call for another one of J.J's projects, Almost Human, he had this to say:
“It became clear that given the time frame and given the process and the way the thing was going that working with Larry in this way was going to get us where we need to be and when we needed to be... Working with Larry Kasdan, especially on a Star Wars movie is kind of unbeatable,”
And about outgoing writer Michael Arndt, Abrams added:
“Working with Michael was a wonderful experience and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of his or adore him more, He’s a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process,”
J.J also hinted at the possibility of working with Michael Arndt again in the future.
It's not unreasonable to think that the situation behind the scenes may not be as rosy as it seems, but changing screenwriters is a common practice for feature films. Plus, now that they have a release date to meet it only makes sense that J.J & crew need to careful with their time now.
