Rumor: Clone Wars Bonus Content to be Released Through Apple TV

Our friends over at JediNews have a very interesting rumor for Star Wars fans, specifically fans seeing the galaxy far, far away on television.  They are reporting that Disney will be launching a Star Wars App for Apple TV devices running iOS7 and that they will be releasing the Clone Wars "Bonus Content", promised since the show's cancellation, through this app during the 2013 holiday season.  In addition, the app will provide production news from the set of Episode VII and serve as a platform for releasing Star Wars Rebels.  According to JediNews:

“A Disney branded app for Star Wars will launch on Apple TV devices, with plans to distribute the final Clone Wars episodes exclusively digitally only through the Apple TV device for a limited period of time. This will happen in this holiday season.

In 2014, plans are in an early stage to use the platform to deliver SW7 production news ‘live’ from the sets, followed with Star Wars Rebels in late 2014 taking us all the way through to SW7 release.”

No word yet on whether the device will be made available for portable iOS devices such as iPhone or iPad. JediNews also points out that Disney has recently launched Apple TV apps for Disney Channel and Disney XD, so a Star Wars app isn't that much of a stretch.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if The Clone Wars Bonus Content is released this way.  Lucasfilm has said they're looking into "outside the box" methods for distributing it, and this fits the description for outside the box.  My main concern, however, is that I don't feel Apple TV is at the point yet where enough people have it and that many Clone Wars fans may be left out - even more than if the bonus content were to be been released through another digital platform - specifically StarWars.com and/or Netflix.

As for the Episode VII news being released through the app - I love it!  It sounds like a fantastic way for Lucasfilm to keep their fans informed, I just hope they put out a mobile version of the app and make it available on non-iOS devices as well (though I have feeling that won't happen).  I, also, fully expect Rebels to get a traditional release concurrent to what's being made available on the app, similar to what StarWars.com did during The Clone Wars' run.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed (or denied) by Lucasfilm or Disney.
