On This Day: June 5, 2015

By Ciaran Duggan,

The fourth weekend of Star Wars Weekends commenced at Disney's Hollywood Studios on this day back in 2015.

In the same year that Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens hit cinemas and Star Wars Celebration returned to California,  Star Wars weekends remained one of Lucasfilm's biggest events of that year.

Star Wars Weekends IV featured special guest appearances from Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and the man who donned the iconic Boba Fett outfit, Jeremy Bulloch.

Ashley Eckstein, who voiced Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, also made an appearance as a guest from June 5 - 7.

Disney Retires 'Star Wars Weekends' Event

By: Dominic Jones

Some sad news today.  Disney announced that, with construction beginning on "Star Wars Land", unfortunately the annual Disney's Star Wars Weekends events, which took place at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, has been retired.  The event ran for many years, long before the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, and featured Star Wars events, shows and celebrities.  In recent years, the focus had been the animated television series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Though I'm sad to see the event go (especially since I always wanted to attend one, but never did) I understand why Disney would end Weekends.  The event made more sense when Lucasfilm and Disney were separate entities, but since Disney now owns Star Wars they can feature Star Wars events year round and don't need to hold those to just a few weekends every year.  And with Star Wars Land opening within the decade, there will be an entire park of just Star Wars 365 days a years and there would be no need to have specialized Star Wars events in other parks.

All that being said, I wish Star Wars Weekends had been given one final year to go out with a bang.  A last hooray, so to speak.  Sadly, it doesn't look like that will happen.

How do you feel about Weekends ending?  Let us know in the comments!

Rumor: Disney Star Wars Weekends To Be Retired in 2016

By: Dominic Jones

With all the news about new Star Wars things coming to the Disney Parks in the coming months and years (Launch Bay, new Star Tours planets, and a whole new Star Wars theme park - construction on which begins next year).  But with all these good things coming, some old favorites may be on their way out.  Walt Disney News Today is reporting that the annual Star Wars Weekends events at Disney's Hollywood Studios will be retired in 2016, meaning this year's events would have been the last one.

In addition, WDNT is also reporting that classic Disney characters dressed as Star Wars characters (Jedi Mickey, Darth Goofy, etc.) will also be retired.  This was first reported by our friends at RebelForce Radio back in May.

While it's sad to see Weekends go (assuming this report is true), there are apparently still plans for Star Wars seasonal events in the parks (beginning in January 2016 with Season of the Force).

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

How do you feel about the rumor that Star Wars Weekends is ending?  What about the retirement of the Disney-Star Wars cross-over character?  Let us know in the comments.

Video: The Most Interesting Jedi in the Galaxy

By: Dominic Jones

Star Wars voice actor extraordinaire James Arnold Taylor (obi-Wan Kenobi on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels) has released a new video on his YouTube channel, titled "The Most Interesting Jedi in the Galaxy".  The video was produced for Star Wars Weekend but ultimately never got used.    It parodies the famous Dos Equis marketing campaign, "The Most Interesting Man in the World", and features Tom Kane reprising his role as Yoda from Star Wars: The Clone Wars (as well as many other Star Wars projects).

Check it out below,

Stay rebellious, my friends.

(Updated) Dave Filoni Not Attending Star Wars Weekends

By: Dominic Jones

If you're heading to Orlando, Florida this weekend for the final Disney Star Wars Weekend, you're in for an extra special treat.  It has been announced that Star Wars Rebels Executive producer and Supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Dave Filoni will be in attendance.  Dave will be taking part in a special interview with event host James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan on The Clone Wars) at 5:00pm on Saturday June 14th (tomorrow!!)
It's great to see Dave heading to Weekends, especially this weekend as it is very much a Clone Wars reunion.  Guests from The Clone Wars include Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Cat Taber (Padme Amidala), Tom Kane (Yoda), and Dee Bradley Baker (the clones), as well as hosts Taylor (Kenobi), and Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano).  Hopefully FIloni will be able to get in on the fun with his old cast.  Also in attendance will be Steve Blum (Zeb) who will be representing Star Wars Rebels.

Looking forward to hearing all about the panel from those who are there (really jealous of all of you!) and I can't wait to see what surprises for Star Wars Rebels Filoni has in store for the fans!

Update: Unfortunately Dave just posted this message on his Facebook page:

"Hey Star Wars fans,

As some of you guessed, since this is the last weekend for Disney Star Wars Weekends, I was going to fly down to Orlando to meet up with everyone.

Unfortunately, due to the needs of our production on Star Wars Rebels, I have decided to stay here and continue to work on the show. Our team on Rebels wants to deliver the best show possible, and in that effort every minute counts and every detail matters.

Thank you for your continued support.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I’ll see you at San Diego Comic-con!

May the Force be with you,

Dave"

Jedi-Looking Mark Hamill Appears At Star Wars Weekends

By: Benjamin Hart

There's something familiar about this...

Star Wars Weekends is going on now at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! One of the celebrity guests this weekend is none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. Mark is said to begin filming on Star Wars Episode VII very soon back in London. Today Disney revealed a promo image for the Weekend featuring Mark alongside Jedi Mickey. Now aside from the fact that he looks fantastic, it's also worth noting that he is now sporting a short beard, and of course, armed with a Lightsaber.

He certainly looks ready for his return to the Saga already! I don't know about you, but I can't wait for December 18th, 2015!

Mark Hamill Talks Episode VII

By: Dominic Jones

In advance of his appearance at Disney Star Wars Weekends at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill spoke with the Orlando Sentinel.  Hamill discussed his status on Episode VII, saying,

"I’ve altered my diet. I’ve started working out. There’s that.  But on the film itself: I toured the departments, I’ve looked at wardrobe, and I saw the creature shop. I went around and met all the cast people, saw the technicians working on some new things."

He also discussed how the attitude about Star Wars spoilers has changed over the years,
"This is a whole different world … The first one, no one cared. The second one there was a lot of interest, but it was before the Internet. … I tell people we’re not trying to annoy you or tease you or play some massive game. Basically what the goal is to keep the surprises for the movie instead of spoiling them on the Internet."

As for reuniting with his co-stars, Hamill described the experience,
"I hadn’t seen Tony Daniels or Carrie [Fisher] or Harrison [Ford] or Peter Mayhew in ages. … I was wonderful to see them again, because I didn’t expect to. Again, this is all so unexpected. It’s like getting out that pair of pants you haven’t worn in five years and finding a 20-dollar bill in the pocket. Oh, this is nice."

It sounds to me that Mark, like Carrie Fisher, hasn't started on the film yet.  However, you can bet that not long after his appearance at Star Wars Weekends this year, he'll be hopping on a plane to Pinewood to begin shooting on Episode VII.   It will also be interesting to see if Episode VII is brought up much during his appearance at SWW.  I wouldn't hold my breath for anything but, given the Lucasfilm's attitude of giving as much to the fans as possible without spoiling much, you never know what tidbits might be dropped....

New 'Star Wars Rebels' Footage Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Today the Disney Parks YouTube channel released two new videos from Star Wars Weekends, going on now at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The videos, focused on Kanan Jarrus and Chopper from the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels, feature both live action footage filmed at Star Wars Weekends and clips from the series at the end of each video. You can watch them both below:

Our sources say that there has been an extensive amount of filming for these videos, so more footage could be on the way. Keep it here and we will give an update if more videos appear.

Opinion: Experiencing Star Wars Weekends

By: Lillian Skye

Star Wars Weekends is going on every weekend (through June 15th) at Disney's Hollywood Studios and is celebrating the best of the Saga and the upcoming Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels. Where Storm Troopers heckle the crowds, the Cantina Band mingles with their intergalactic fans, and diehards have a chance to meet and interact with their favorite Star Wars celebrities, there is something for everyone at this annual event.

Still debating on if you want to brave the crowds? (Not to mention the Florida heat.) Need tips and advice on what to do when you get there?

I've been going to Star Wars Weekends the past several years, and have and seen the best of the  stars, shows, and rides. This year, I attended Star Wars Weekends for Weekend 2, and scoped out must-dos of the event:

SPECIAL GUESTS

You'll hear this a thousand times, but get to the park early if you want the chance to meet your favorite Star Wars celebrities. Fans camp out overnight at the park for the opportunity to get an autograph ticket, and set up beds, coolers, card tables (see left), and folding chairs for the night. Even if you arrive at 3 am on the day of the event, you're not guaranteed an autograph ticket. I got to the park at 4 in the morning, and Warwick Davis and Jeremy Bulloch's lines were long and each full of sleeping fans who had stayed the night. Autograph tickers are first come, first serve so plan accordingly!

FOOD

Disney's Hollywood Studies goes all out for Star Wars Weekends, and features an array of entrées and sweets fit for a battalion of Clone Troopers. If you're in the park early, check out the Sci-Fi Drive in Theatre Restaurant, which serves Star Wars themed breakfasts such as Anchorhead Appetizers, dishes like"Mois Eisley Morning," "Ackbar Surprise," and "Tatooine Sunrise."

From pretzel lightsabers to Darth Vader cupcakes, there are plenty of sweets to go around. Candy stores and eateries throughout the park have different sweets on hand, so make sure to stop in and check them out.

If you're over 21 and feeling stressed out from the chaos of the crowds, the adult side of Disney has your back. For $13.75, you could choose the Light or the Dark Side, and sit down with "The Force," a combination of Grey Goose Vodka, Chambord, and Wildberry Lemonade, or "The Dark Side," which is made from Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Cointrau, and Pomegranate Lemonade. Each drink comes with a Glow Lightsaber.

RIDES

Star Tours. Rockin' Roller Coaster. Tower of Terror. Those are the three rides that will draw the most crowds during Star Wars Weekends. Any normal weekend, you should head towards the Coaster and the Tower first, but since it's a Star Wars themed event, you'll want to RUN and dodge the strollers walk briskly towards the Star Tours ride and jump in line. If you get on it while the park is just opening, you should only have a 5-10 minute wait. Later in the day, you'll see a time more along the lines of 120 minutes…

Once you're finished riding Star Tours (for the first of fifteen times that Weekend), you've set yourself up to meet some amazing characters who are roaming the area.

CHARACTERS

This year, Rebels characters Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Chopper are roaming the park, encouraging fans to get excited for the Star Wars Rebels premiere this fall. Fan favorites like Chewbacca, Anakin Skywalker, and the Ewok Chipmunks still attract a crowd, so heading straight towards a character's line is the best way to avoid an hour wait for a picture. (I snagged a picture with Chewbacca in front of Star Tours as soon as the park opened.)

DARTH'S MAUL MALL

You're in luck! This year, Disney realized that people get heat stroke when they spend hours standing on asphalt in an immobile line. This year, Darth's Mall is nestled behind the Toy Story Midway Mania! ride, and offers shade and air-condition while guests wait to enter the store. Once you're inside, be sure to build (free!!) mini lego sets and tour the store. If you're a female fan or have a special fangirl in your life, be sure to check out the Her Universe by Ashley Eckstein collection, which is centrally located in the Mall. They have all new items this year, including jewelry, a Han Solo Dress, and Imperial Leggings. Then, prepare to make your final purchases, and be aware that depending on the crowds, you may have to spend twenty minutes in line. If you're from out of town, the store can ship your items somewhere for you, too, so that you don't have to lug that cumbersome Bantha plush all around the park.

BEHIND THE FORCE

Each weekend, there is a special Star Wars Rebels guest at the Behind the Force show. Ashley Eckstein, the voice behind Ahsoka Tano, sits down each week with a new "voice" to discuss each Rebel's actors roll in the series. At each show, an exclusive clip with a character is shown, along with an inside sneak peak with the making of Star Wars Rebels and a tour of the Rebels crew led by Dave Filoni at Lucasfilm.

Whether you're a passionate fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars fan eager for a new animated series, a Star Wars Rebels skeptic, or never watched any of the shows, check out Behind the Force for some exclusive content and some air-conditioned entertainment.

PARADE

Celebrities, Storm Troopers, Jedi Micky--the parade is a Star Wars fan's delight. People flock to line up among the parade route for a chance to get a glimpse at their favorite characters and stars. Make sure your phone has space and that it is charged, you'll want to take photos of every realistic Tusken Raider, Wookiee, and droid that passes by.

HINT: If you're not interested in parades, this is the best time to ride Star Tours or eat lunch while the masses are enthralled by the celebrities and the 501st Legion ;)

STARS OF THE SAGA

Stars of the Saga is a celebrity talk show hosted by James Arnold Taylor. The fact that it is hosted by the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi himself is enough reason to attend, but throw in an Original Trilogy actor each week and it makes the show appeal to every generation of Star Wars fan. Get there an hour early if you want good seats and bring a water bottle or two, because the lines will start to wrap around and you may be out in the sun until it starts moving.

Star Wars Weekends is a blast for diehard and casual fans alike because there is something for everyone to do.

Whether you're a Star Wars Weekends veteran or if you're planning to go for the first time, eat the food, see the shows, geek out with the other fans, and have a stellar time

This article is an opinion piece and represents the views of the writer (the one being kissed by the Cantina Band member), and not the entire Star Wars Underworld organization.

New Her Universe Items to Debut at SWW

By: Lillian Skye

If you're searching for the right accessories to let your geek flag fly, then the "My Hero" collection from Her Universe is the droid that you're looking for.

“R2-D2 is my favorite character in the Star Wars Universe,” says Her Universe creator Ashley Eckstein. “He’s my hero because he’s always there to save the day throughout the saga."

Her Universe has featured jewelry pieces in the past, but nothing like this: "I wanted higher end Star Wars jewelry that will pass the test of time," continued Eckstein. "I’m proud to debut these beautiful collectibles that were designed at The Sparkle Factory and made in the USA at SWW.”

In addition to the new jewelry collection, Her Universe is premiering several new clothing items that include more plus size shirts, hooded tanks, leggings, skirts, and a Han Solo costume dress.

Fans can shop Her Universe and meet Eckstein when she will be signing autographs and Her Universe Merchandise in Darth’s Mall every Friday thru Sunday during Star Wars Weekends from 5:00-6:00PM.  She will also be hosting Behind The Force: Star Wars Rebels and will be hosting the Padawan Mind Challenge –an interactive Star Wars trivia challenge designed for younglings ages 4 to 11.

While all of the new items will be available at Star Wars Weekends in Orlando, if you can't make it to Weekends, the new items will be available online starting May 19th.

This is where the fun begins! Preview the "My Hero" jewelry collection in the video below and check out all of the new items online on the Her Universe website.

Star Wars Weekends Guest List Announced!

By: Dominic Jones

With the first Disney Star Wars Weekend seven less than a month away, Disney has unveiled the celebrity guest list for the event.  The list includes actors from the original trilogy, prequel trilogy, The Clone Wars, and the upcoming Star Wars Rebels.  In addition, all weekends will be hosted by James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi on The Clone Wars).    The guests are:

Weekend I: May 16-18
Ahmed Best: Jar Jar Binks (Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace; Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones; Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith; Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Peter Mayhew: Chewbacca (Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith; Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope; Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back; Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi; Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Vanessa Marshall: Hera Syndulla (Star Wars Rebels)

Weekend II: May 23-25
Warwick Davis: Wicket W. Warrick (Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi); Wald (Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
Jeremy Bulloch: Boba Fett (Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back; Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi); Capt. Jeremoch Colton (Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith)
Tiya Sircar: Sabine Wren (Star Wars Rebels)

Weekend III: May 30-June 1
Ray Park: Darth Maul (Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
John Ratzenberger: Major Bren Derlin (Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back)
Taylor Gray: Ezra Bridger (Star Wars Rebels)

Weekend IV: June 6-8
Mark Hamill: Luke Skywalker (Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope; Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back; Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi); Darth Bane (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Ray Park: Darth Maul (Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)

Taylor Gray: Ezra Bridger (Star Wars Rebels)

Weekend V: June 13-15

Cat Taber: Padmé Amidala and several additional characters (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Tom Kane: Yoda, the series’ narrator and several additional characters (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Matt Lanter: Anakin Skywalker and several additional characters (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Steve Blum: Zeb Orrelios (Star Wars Rebels)

I have to say, it looks like Disney has knocked it out of the park again with the guest list.  The biggest surprise to me is that Jar Jar actor Ahmed Best will be there!  It is rare for Ahmed to make convention appearances so if you're looking for his autograph, this is a great opportunity to pick it up.  Also, it looks like Weekend V will be a bit of a Clone Wars reunion!  It's great to see those guys getting the love and respect they deserve from Disney and the fan community (#ThankTheCloneWars).  Weekend IV might be special as well, since Mark Hamil may (finally) be able to talk about Episode VII (assuming he's in it, of course).  Also interesting to note that four cast members from Rebels will be in attendance, hopefully this means there will be some new preview clips and/or trailers!

To all of you going down to Disney for Star Wars Weekends, have fun and know that I am very jealous of you!

BREAKING: Mark Hamill Announced for Star Wars Weekends

By: Lillian Skye

He is Disney's new hope, and he's refusing Uncle Owen's offer to stay on for one more season to spend the weekend of June 6, 2014 at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida.  For the first time in Star Wars Weekends history, Luke Skywalker himself will be attending the galactic interactive event.

Actor Mark Hamill has never made an appearance at Disney's fan favorite event, and will be the first of the Original Trilogy's "big three" to be a celebrity guest.

According to the official Disney Parks blog, "Hamill will be one of the celebrity guests for Weekend IV, June 6-8, 2014. Fans can see him in the daily “Legends of the Force” Star Wars-themed motorcade and in a featured talk show. More details about the event have been placed into the memory systems of an R2-unit and we’ll soon reveal them, but we wanted to share this Force-filled news with you today."

The blog also noted that fans who wish to receive a pass to visit Mark Hamill should arrive early. Fans already start lining up before sunrise, and this year will not be any different. The Force will be with the lucky Star Wars fans who have the opportunity to meet Hamill himself

The four five weekends for the events are:
  • Weekend I: May 16 – 18, 2014
  • Weekend II: May 23 – 25, 2014

The two stand out guest for me (even though I, sadly, won't be going) are Jim Cummings and Sam Witwer.  This will be Cummings first Star Wars specific event.  His character Hondo Ohnaka has become one of the most beloved characters on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, espescially having played such a major role in season 5.  Hopefully this will be the first of many Star Wars events for Cummings.  Witwer, the other standout on the list, is no stranger to conventions (Star Wars or otherwise) and I know from first hand experience (on two occasions) how great he is to the fans.  Plus Witwer is in the incredible position of passionate Star Wars fan turned Star Wars actor so any time he opens his mouth it's worth listening to, regardless of whether he's talking about a project he's involved in or not.

One thing is certain, fans in attendance for any of these weekends are in for a real treat!
