Opinion: Palpatine's Rise And Failings Of The Jedi Order In The Prequels

Your overconfidence is your weakness…..your faith in your friends is yours.”

Emperor Palpatine was unbeatable and untouchable in Return of the Jedi when he engaged in his verbal spar with the son of the Chosen One, Luke Skywalker.

Sitting in his throne on the Death Star, which circled above Endor, Sheev Palpatine had not predicted being betrayed by his apprentice Darth Vader.

However, he had let his guard down and the Empire’s leader was thrown down the shaft after almost electrocuting the “last of the Jedi” to death.

Luke was right to say that the “overconfidence” of Palpatine was his major weakness which cost him dearly in Episode VI.

But looking back on his rise to power, it is easy to see how he became so blinded to his ultimately fateful flaw.

Episode I and II

The Jedi’s phantom menace was Darth Sidious between Episode I and Episode III, including the Clone Wars.

Sidious is a cold, selfish, calculating and brutal villain who cared little for his subordinates, including the cowardly Trade Federation during the Naboo blockade or even his apprentices Maul and Count Dooku.

His sole aim was to obtain absolute power and destroy the Jedi as his Empire rose.

The corruption which already existed within the Republic’s political system and the “narrow, dogmatic” view of the Jedi Council facilitated his goals in Episodes I and II.

In the Phantom Menace, Master Ki Adi Mundi said it was “impossible” that the Sith had returned after 1,000 years, believing the Jedi would have sensed it.

Palpatine himself says that the Senate is made up of “squabbling” delegates who are grounded in self-interest while power at the heart of the Republic was “bogged down in procedure."

A commission to “ascertain the truth” of the Naboo blockade was the final straw that broke the camel’s back for Chancellor Finis Valorum before he was pushed aside and Sidious took his place without any member of the Jedi Order realising.

The failings of the Jedi played a big part in Sidious’ ascension, as Luke himself says in the Last Jedi: “At the height of their powers, they allowed Darth Sidious to rise, create the Empire and wipe them out.

“It was a Jedi Master who was responsible for the training and creation of Darth Vader.”

Anakin became the “prized pupil” that Darth Sidious sought after for years after being elected as Chancellor, all the while being trained by Obi Wan Kenobi between Episode I and Episode II.

It was Palpatine’s biggest gambit after he was given emergency powers to create a Grand Army of the Republic to tackle the “increasing threat” of the Separatists.

The hidden enemy led the Senate but the public one was headed by Count Dooku, who we all know became Sidious’ apprentice after the loss of Maul.

Dooku admitted to the Padawan of his former Padawan, Qui Gonn, on Geonosis that hundreds of senators were under the influence of a Sith Lord called Darth Sidious. But Kenobi simply responded with: “I don’t believe you.”

It was the epitome of what was wrong with the Jedi and their naivety contributed to their downfall as they became distracted by the Clone Wars.

Dooku’s revelation could have backfired on Sidious, who was lucky.

There was clear distrust between Darth Tyranus and Sidious throughout the Clone Wars as Dooku attempted to enlist the help of Obi Wan to get rid of him. Had the Jedi listened, Sheev’s identity would have been unveiled.

Instead, Dooku travelled to the industrial works on Coruscant to deliver the Death Star plans to his master and the Clone Wars begins.

The early years of Sidious were very calculating, but also risky and interestingly enough Jango Fett’s revelation of Tyranus to Obi Wan on Kamino would be the start of the Jedi’s trail to Sidious.

The Clone Wars

Orchestrating both sides of the Clone Wars saw many plates spin, similar to Jar Jar during a Toydarian dinner party in season three, but how difficult could it be?

Palpatine made it look easy, but it is fair to say that the mystery of Darth Sidious started to unravel as the seasons progressed, particularly in season six, soon after he had killed Savage Opress on Mandalore and captured Maul as a play toy.

The Nightsisters, guided by Mother Talzin, were taken out as a threat to Sidious during the events of the Son of Dathomir comic, but the scent of his identity was caught by the Jedi during the pre-emptive Order 66 failings and the uncovering of the fate of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas.

Clone trooper Fives discovered the conspiracy behind the Republic military force, realising a chip had been inserted into their minds to make them turn on their Jedi generals by the command of a sinister force, Sidious.

The early activation of Tup’s chip was a major concern for Palpatine, but the smooth politician was able to convince the Jedi that the clone trooper had been infected with a parasite and every military man would be inoculated for protection.

Jedi Master Windu and Yoda should have forensically scrutinised the Chancellor on this, but they chose not to do so. It cost them and saved Sidious.

Yoda’s journey with Qui Gon and the force spirits saw him travel to Dagobah and the SIth world, Moraband, but it all started with the search for Sifo-Dyas.

It was the first time that the Jedi had truly begun to dig deeper into finding out how the clones came into being and put Sidious in one of his most vulnerable positions.

The Sith Lord’s anger was so fierce that he choked his own apprentice, Dooku, on Serenno for his "clumsiness" despite being light years away in the Chancellor’s office on Coruscant.

The Jedi uncovered that Tyranus was Dooku and that the Sith had ordered the manufacture of the clones, but did not investigate this avenue further.

It was a big let off for Sidious as the Sith Lord held back executing Order 66 until he had acquired the “prized pupil” of the hero of the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker.

Revenge of the Sith

After the death of Count Dooku, Anakin became Palpatine’s new apprentice, Obi Wan tells Padme outside her Coruscant apartment in Episode III.

That was Sidious’ intention after the Chosen One cut off the head of Count Dooku on Grievous' Separatist dreadnought when Palpatine was fake kidnapped.

It was his masterful seduction of Anakin throughout his childhood and as a Jedi Knight that led to the hero of the Clone Wars becoming the villain of the Empire.

However, the Jedi were on the case and discovered Sidious’ true identity after Anakin was told to spy on the Chancellor. This came as the council started to put the pieces together in ROTS.

During the Siege of Mandalore, Obi Wan told Ahsoka, Bo Katan and Rex that the council believed that “Darth Sidious was the Sith Lord who orchestrated the Clone Wars and played both sides of it from the beginning”.

Ahead of the climactic duel on Mandalore, Maul said that Anakin Skywalker was the “key to everything” as the former Sith Lord believed that he would destroy the balance of the force but Ahsoka did not accept his vision of the future.

It is fair to say that Anakin was the key and when Mace Windu went to the office of the Chancellor to confront the true Sith Lord, the fate of the galaxy rested on the Chosen One’s shoulders.

Of course, Sidious had already revealed his true nature to Anakin, which meant that the Jedi were aware, but it was all part of a larger plot to turn Skywalker to the dark side.

For Sidious, who murdered three Jedi masters in cold blood within seconds, it was a high-risk move to allow himself to be at the mercy of Windu’s purple lightsaber when Anakin walked in.

Following the duel with Windu, Palpatine bet that the boy, who he had groomed for years, would step in and save him.

This was based on the pretence that the Sith Lord could save Anakin’s wife, Padme, from “certain death” after Skywalker watched his own mother die in his arms on Tatooine.

However, all the decades of destruction to the Republic and ascension to the seat of ultimate power in the Senate could have all fallen apart if Anakin had chosen a different path and let Windu kill Sidious.

It does not mean to say that the Republic would have survived. Heck, Palpatine says that without Order 66 there would likely be a galaxy-wide civil war “without end”.

But, Sidious’ gambit would have been shattered and centuries of Sith work would have fallen by the wayside with his death and his dream of becoming Emperor over.

Those fine margins made the difference to the fate of the galaxy in Episode III.

Conclusion

To conclude, Sidious won everything he sought after. He twisted Anakin Skywalker to the dark side to become his enforcer and puppet Darth Vader while carrying out near genocide of the Jedi Order and receiving “thunderous” support for his imperial vision.

However, there were moments where his “overconfidence” at luring the Tatooine boy over to the dark side - which included revealing his true identity to the Jedi council - could have cost him dearly.

The Sith code also played a factor in almost coming back to haunt him.

Maul came back from the dead to become a rival to the Republic on Mandalore with the allies of the Nightsisters and crime families.

Dooku told Obi Wan the truth about Sidious while recruiting Asajj Ventress and Savage Oppress as tools to take down the Chancellor.

In addition, Jedi council masters were on Sidious’ trail and aware of the existence of the dark lord and his true intentions with the Clone Wars during Revenge of the Sith.

Mace Windu even had Palpatine at his mercy and had Anakin not intervened, Sidious would have been destroyed.

Had Yoda, Ahsoka or Obi Wan been on Coruscant during these events things may have played out very differently. This did not happen though.

Instead, Sidious can rightly be lauded for being the ultimate mastermind who successfully orchestrated the Clone Wars and removed his rivals during the height of their power.

Emperor Palpatine maintained his phantom menace status until the shroud of the dark side suffocated the light of the Jedi.

Opinion: Who Is The Mysterious Robed Figure Present In The Rogue One Trailer?

By Ciaran Duggan,

It has been two days since the highly anticipated trailer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was officially released by Lucasfilm and Disney. One of the segments from the trailer that has got fans talking is the scene which can be seen in the above image. The central question asked by fans has been: who is the hooded and cloaked figure who appears in this scene? Is it Maul or Ezra? A young Snoke or another inquisitor?

It is almost undeniable that the cloaked character is a 'villanous' one. That can be corroborated by the fact the colours of the environment and the character are both black and red. One can assume that this location is based on the Death Star, or on an Imperial Star Destroyer. In addition, the inclusion of the red Royal Imperial Guards is striking. In the canon universe, the Royal guards have only ever appeared in the presence of Palpatine, in both the Prequels and Original Trilogy. The appearance of the Imperial Royal guards signifies that this scene is important and that the figure entering the room is also a significant character. There are a wide number of candidates for who the hooded figure could be. My hypothesis is that the character above is a villainous 'force user', and that forms the basis for the reason why I will critique just three possible candidates.

Palpatine

As stated in the aforementioned paragraph, the appearance of the Red Imperial Royal guards has led to speculation, from some fans, that the mysterious figure is in fact Palpatine. As Chancellor of the Republic, Palpatine was seen in the presence of his Royal militia, and the only other time we saw these guards was accompanying Palpatine on the Death Star in Return of the Jedi

This is an interesting thesis, however, the physical appearance of the character does not seem to match the Emperor's. The height of the robed figure seems marginally taller than Emperor Palpatine. In addition, the cloak this individual wears is not so reminiscent of the style of Palpatine. Personally, I would look to discount the possibility that this figure is Palpatine.

Chance: 4/10

Grand Inquisitor

Some fans have speculated that the individual is in fact the Grand Inquisitor. The Grand Inquisitor was a title bestowed to an imperial inquisitor at the top of the hierarchical, inquisitor, pyramid. Jason Issacs played the only Grand Inquisitor, we have seen to date, on the Television Show: Star Wars Rebels. His character was killed off at the end of Season One, and since then a power struggle has emerged among the other inquisitors. These inquisitors have looked to fill the void of the Grand Inquisitors' death and assume the 'Grand Inquisitor' title themselves. None of the inquisitors have managed to succeed thus far.

As far as speculation goes, this isn't an unfeasible idea. The Grand Inquisitor was subservient to both Darth Vader and the Emperor. We see the cloaked individual bow down to a sentient in the Chamber, which certainly signifies that the character who has entered the room, is a subordinate individual.  Notwithstanding this hypothesis, it seems overall to be unlikely. The central characters in this movie are Rebel soldiers, and therefore less emphasis has been attributed to force-user characters. It seems hard to imagine that this film would introduce a new force-capable character, when that is not the emphasis of this movie. In addition, we have heard rumours about the fact that James Earl Jones will be reprising his role as Darth Vader in the upcoming film, because of the importance of the mission at hand - the fact the Rebels are attempting to sequester the Death Star plans.

This idea sounds interesting, and certainly feasible in principle because it would be a nice tie-in to Rebels and if one believes Darth Vader is in the cylinder chamber, then it could be the inquisitor bowing to Lord Vader (similar to the image above). However, I have doubts about the degree to which this hooded figure will in fact be a new Inquisitor.

Chance: 5/10

Darth Vader

Wild speculation from fans has been that the hooded figure, seen in the trailer, is in fact the Sith Lord himself: Darth Vader.

Immediately fans will look to refute this speculation by pointing out that this character is not wearing the attire of the "more machine than man" Darth Vader. That is very true. However, we have seen in the films that Vader can take his mask off (as seen in the Empire Strikes Back), and no doubt can take his suit off, even if for a brief time. Vader sustained a facial injury in the fight against Ahsoka, in the Rebels S2 finale, with which a portion of his mask was cut from his face. This conveys that, in spite of the fact the suit is used to power and sustain Vader, he can survive without wearing his attire, for a brief duration of time.

In addition, as mentioned previously, the cloaked individual bows down to a sentient in the Chamber, which certainly signifies that the character is a subordinate individual. We have seen a couple of occasions where Vader has bowed down to his master, Palpatine. Moreover, the appearance of the Royal Imperial Guards could mean that Vader is communicating with the Emperor, either in person or via hologram. It would explain why the Royal Guards are present in the chamber.

Finally, we have yet to see the fallout from Star Wars: Rebels. Will Vader engage in another duel with Ashoka? Will Vader fight Maul? And if Vader does engage in a lighsaber fight, will he sustain injuries? Rebels could yet bridge the gap to Rogue One at the end of the next season. This would make particular sense, as there has been speculation that Season Three of Rebels will be the final season of the animated TV series, Rumours have also speculated that the end game in mind is the Death Star. Dave Filoni has also expressed that the Rebels' storyline will be moving closer in line with the events of A New Hope, and Rogue One.

Consequently, I believe that the hooded figure is more likely to be Darth Vader, without his suit on.

Chance: 7/10

Conclusion

To conclude this, I would like to ask people to give their own opinions on who they believe the mysterious character is. Do you agree with my conclusions? Do you think it is in fact Palpatine, or the Grand Inquisitor? Do you think its another villainous character that we have previously seen in the Saga, but not mentioned? Or do you think this is a new character?

Speculate and leave your comments below.

EA Introduces New Heroes & A Villain For 'Star Wars Battlefront'

By: Benjamin Hart

With all the hype for The Force Awakens going around recently it's easy to forget the long anticipated arrival of Star Wars Battlefront is right around the corner! We're now less than a month away from the video game's launch and reveals from EA are beginning to become much more frequent. It's been know for some time that the ever popular heroes and villains aspect of Star Wars Battlefront II are being brought back for the new game, and EA initially revealed that Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Boba Fett will be playable in the game. More recently they have revealed two new heroes and a villain that will be part of the game; Han Solo, Princess Leia and Emperor Palpatine.

Solo, who sports his look from The Empire Strikes Back, is described as gunslinger and a loner, which matches his on-screen persona. He will be similar to a Rebel trooper with a much more impressive arsenal. While playing as Han you will have several special abilities, which include a Rapid Fire feature, which allows you to fire his DL-44 blaster quickly without it overheating for a few seconds, a Lucky Shot that allows to build up and release more powerful blasts, and also a Shoulder Charge mode which gives the character advanced speed to get in, or out of battles and meant to mimic Han's iconic charge at Stormtroopers onboard the Death Star in A New Hope.

Lead Hero Designer Jamie Keen had this to say about Han:

“It’s been incredibly fun to work on Han Solo for Star Wars Battlefront. He’s such a likeable character, and turning his unique persona into gameplay features is a thrill when you’re a Star Wars fan. We’ve also witnessed the love for this character in our playtests. Han’s sardonic lines and emotes seem to put a smile on everyone’s face."

And about Leia, Keen added:

“Leia is a character that succeeds through her fearless, strategic mind.  We can all remember moments when her quick-thinking blaster fire helped the Rebels out of trouble. Our goal for all the Hero characters has been to capture their essence and spirit from the original Star Wars™ film trilogy, and then convey that through gameplay. Doing that is more straightforward with characters wielding Lightsabers and Force abilities; it’s obvious how to build gameplay around those things. Leia was trickier in that regard since she doesn’t have a specific, favorite weapon, so we had to represent her in another way."

In gameplay Leia is described as a support player and leader. Players who spawn near her spawn as Alderaan Honor Gaurds, and the character herself will have several exclusive abilities. Trooper Bane will allow Leia enhanced, one-shot one-kill blaster bolts. Enhanced Squad Shield, as the title implies, gives Leia a more advanced, tougher shield that can withstand some Force abilities and can be shot through using Trooper Bane. Supply Drop allows Leia to place various power ups on the battlefield to assist other players.

The Emperor will, of course, be equipped with his iconic Force Lightning as his main weapon. Other special abilities include Force Dash which allows for quicker travel across the map, and Imperial Resources which allows for powerup distribution to soldiers and other villains.

Jamie Keen also spoke about Palpatine, saying:

“Based on how he’s been characterized and how he plays, Emperor Palpatine might be my personal favorite character in Star Wars Battlefront. But getting to that point has been a challenge. We wanted many different things with the Emperor. We wanted him to be very mobile, but also about deception and fooling people that he’s fragile and weak. As you've seen in the original Star Wars™ trilogy, Palpatine pretends to be a weak old man, when he in fact is extremely powerful. That two-faced side was something we wanted to convey in gameplay and the Emperor’s abilities."

Very exciting to see more iconic faces being added to the game, They seem to imply that multiple villains and/or heroes will be playable in the same battle. How awesome will it be for yourself and a friend to play side by side as Darth Vader and the Emperor in a single battle?

Star Wars Battlefront hits PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 17th!

Palpatine's First Name Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Social media was set a blaze this afternoon after a critical tidbit of information about a legendary Star Wars character leaked online. Ever since his introduction in The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980, Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine has had no first name, only later being know alternatively by his Sith title Darth Sidious. For years many speculated that the the beloved villain simply only had one name, now we've learned that's not that case. A few days ago at the 'A New Dawn' panel at New York Comic Con, it was revealed that the upcoming novel Tarkin, written by James Luceno, will finally reveal Palpatine's first name. Earlier today the Star Wars Wikia Wookieepedia updated their article on Palpatine with the new name and listed page 93 of Tarkin as their source. (Obviously one of their editors got an advanced copy of the novel.)  So without further ado, The Phantom Menace's full name is....
