Fan Fiction: The Living Force

By: Zac Arnold

The door chime alerted Obi-Wan Kenobi that his rest had been untimely cut short. Sitting up, he looked outside the small window in his quarters to see that Coruscant was still engulfed in darkness. He opened his door and Obi-Wan squinted his eyes to see the unwavering gaze of his master.

“Good morning Padawan,” his voice was serene, neither energetic nor tired.

“Is it, Master?” the young man replied, groggily. “I couldn’t tell just yet.”

Qui-Gon Jinn’s mouth creased into what could be interpreted as a smile. “It is nearly daybreak here, and also where we are heading. So now is the best time to begin. Meet me at landing platform B in 15 minutes.” And with that, Qui-Gon headed down the halls of the great Jedi Temple without another word.

The two boarded a shuttle, quickly cleared planet traffic control with their Jedi frequency, and made their way to a destination not yet known to the younger of the two. As they made their way farther and farther from the galaxy’s capital planet, Obi-Wan began to wonder just what was in store for them.

 “What’s our mission, Master?”

“Our mission? Jedi have no missions, only purpose. And our purpose is to serve the Force.”

Obi-Wan pondered a moment, then asked, “I thought the Jedi served the Republic?”

Qui-Gon answered without missing a beat. “The Force creates, designs, and permeates throughout the galaxy. Without it, planets do not exist, nor do people, and there is no purpose in life. The Force allows governing bodies to rise and fall, and the current governing body is a proponent of peace, democracy, and equality.  As servants of the Force and keepers of the peace, the Jedi serve the Republic and the Force simultaneously.”

From that moment onward, not a word was spoken as Obi-Wan thought about what his master said to him.

The two cloaked figures disembarked from the shuttle onto a moon covered completely with forests. The brush was so thick they had to land near a body of water, for there was no other clearing nearby. Behind them lay the lake, ahead of them laid the forest, and without a word, Qui-Gon quickly dashed into the forest.

“Master, wait!” the young, nervous teenager exclaimed, but to no avail. His Master was already several dozen meters into the jungle, and showed no signs of waiting, or coming back.

Obi-Wan chased after him, trying to look through the branches and vines, but the brown cloak his Master wore kept him perfectly camouflaged. He started looking for footprints, but the mud was quickly absorbing what was left of the indentations the Jedi Master’s boots had made. Finally, Obi-Wan realized what was going on. “This is a test,” he said to no one in particular. And with that, he stretched out with his feelings as he had one been instructed, and what he felt shook his most inner being.

This moon was teeming with life! From the small reptilian to the giant predator, everything had its own unique feel in the Force, as if it were amplified throughout all five senses. The feeling took him so aback that Obi-Wan decided to stop stretching out so far. He would be quite overwhelmed with the local animals without stretching out to the entire moon. Reeling himself back in, Obi-Wan tried to regain his focus so he could tell which direction his Master had gone.

“Concentrate… Contentrate…” he continually thought to himself. Again tapping into this new amplified Force, Kenobi tried to find Qui-Gon’s resonation in the Force. When he had, his results startled him, and he couldn’t believe what he was feeling. No… It couldn’t be. I must be mistaken. But it was no mistake. Obi-Wan slowly turned around, and there, behind a tree, stood his Master.

“Well done, my apprentice. You have passed your first test in learning to stretch out with your feelings. Now, let us put these new instincts to practice.”

Qui-Gon set off, and Obi-Wan followed close behind. The elder Jedi cleared logs and jumped over stones as flawlessly as an animal that’s lived in the jungle his whole life. The younger, however, was not so fortunate. It seemed every thornbush, every upturned root, and every ditch was in Obi-Wan’s way.

How does he move so flawlessly? He thought to himself. Stretching out once more, he could sense that Qui-Gon’s eyes were actually shut. This puzzled the young man all the more. Then he realized his eyes were not keeping up with the terrain, but his instincts could. Reaching out with his feelings, embracing this… Active Force… Obi-Wan began to see things more clearly when his eyes were dark. The invisible path his Master had been traveling on suddenly became visible, but it took every ounce of effort to remember and see it with his mind.

After two hours, Kenobi’s strength was failing. We’ve been keeping this pace without any food or water for too long. He thought disparagingly. Then, without hearing a word, Obi-Wan felt a voice speaking to him.

Rely on the Force, Padawan. Not nutrition. The Force provides the endurance, the stamina, and the nutrition will follow close behind.

Not sure what his Master meant, Kenobi tried hard to think of anything except food. He focused even harder on the path, but even more on his surroundings. There were birds, trees, rivers, reptiles, insects, and amphibians all around, and he could feel each and every presence as they permeated through the Force. As he travelled, Obi-Wan began to see that the presences he felt helped make the path he and Qui-Gon were travelling on. It wasn’t the dirt or brush that showed them the way; it was the signatures that were all connected through the Force. Opening himself to his intensified senses, Obi-Wan started sensing things he never had before.

His ears were hearing the rustle of a small mammal gathering food for its young, except the resonance had to have been nearly a kilometer away. Yet it felt just as important as the insect colony they had passed just seconds earlier. His feet were no longer feeling the impact of the ground as it once had. He was now moving flawlessly through the forest, as if walking on air behind his Master. His sense of smell alerted him to the mold and mildew growing on the different plants. Embracing each one, he could begin to see a pattern of importance. No sense was more important than the other – particularly sight. He had quickly learned in this jungle how deceptive his eyes had been, and closed them so he could focus. Now is as good a time as any, he cautiously thought to himself. Slowly opening his eyes, everything seemed a blur, as if time were being sped forward ten times over. Yet, as he concentrated, Obi-Wan began to see he could take mental images of the things he passed, and the Force would allow him to concentrate on it as he continued to run. He noticed the half-eaten bark on one of the trees, the small fish carcass that a predator must have caught days before, and even the little creases on some of the exotic leaves.

Obi-Wan had never sensed his surroundings quite like this before in any of his trainings. Master Yoda had taught him as a youngling how to anticipate danger and use the Force to quicken his reflexes, but this was a level beyond anything he had touched at the temple. His Master recognized his awe, and that he was losing his focus, and slowed his pace near a freshwater river.

“What do you sense, Obi-Wan?” Qui-Gon asked rather vaguely.

“I sense that the Force is particularly strong on this moon, Master. Though I don’t particularly know why.”

“Mm,” Qui-Gon nodded in agreement. “It is strong, and it is alive, is it not? Can you sense life amplified here, my apprentice?”

“Yes, Master,” he conceded, “but I always considered the Force to be the focus of the Midi Chlorians, how is everything so vibrant here but dulled to me at a place like the Temple?”

“The Jedi Temple, and Coruscant itself, can be a busy place. I find it hard to quiet my mind there myself sometimes. Here, it is easier to sense the movements of the Force, because it is the only thing to focus on. On Coruscant, we mold our powers in the Force, but I believe that here, the Force molds us into better vessels for its service. Hearing, smelling, feeling, seeing, and even tasting this amplified, living Force, allows us to understand and focus on it wherever we go.”

“By feeling and embracing it here, it becomes easier to recognize elsewhere,” Kenobi paraphrased curiously.

“Correct. You are a quick study, but we still have much to cover, and little time to do it. Get a drink and have some food, we will head northeast shortly.”

Their trek resumed in what seemed like seconds but was really minutes, and not long after, a deluge of rain hit that portion of the moon. The onslaught was so intense that the two Jedi were drenched within minutes. Still the pressed on, though, at what appeared to be the same pace they had before. Still trying to understand and embrace everything he was experiencing today, Obi-Wan became baffled at how unaffected his Master seemed to be by this downpour. The mud never slowed him, the rain never made him stop to sneeze, and even the lightning and thunder never startled him. Obi-Wan was about to reach his limit when he noticed something about Qui-Gon he hadn’t seen before – the rain seemed to be going around his Master. Not in a blatant weather-changing way, but one that made him less susceptible to the current state of the environment. Rather than hitting and soaking his cloak, Qui-Gon used the Force to slide the raindrops down the end of his cloak and off the corners.

Resolute to find a way to dry off, Obi-Wan started emulating his Master’s technique, not quite as successfully, but he found the rain easier to manage with his eyes closed. Just as he had before, the young Jedi relied on Force-permeations – this Living Force – to guide his steps through the brush. After nearly an hour in the rain, Obi-Wan began to sense a disturbance – something was wrong with his surroundings. With his eyes shut, he noticed certain patches of the jungle seemed to be missing, and though his vision was limited, it seemed as though no patches were missing visually. Closing his eyes again, Obi-Wan resumed his search for the missing pieces of the jungle, and again found a cold, black, empty spot. A certain chill ran down Kenobi’s spine, and it definitely was not from the weather, but again, he could not pinpoint its origin. Perhaps I’m not concentrating hard enough. I’ll focus on my surroundings more and on the rain a bit less. Maybe I can still fill in the gaps.

But his efforts would be in vain, and with the rain clouding his physical vision, Obi-Wan simply could not tell what it was – or was not – that he was sensing. Their pace slowed considerably after the rain concluded and just as Obi-Wan was about to ask why they were stopping, he reached out with the Force and found his answer on his own. For not a kilometer away was a large mass of metal alloys and mechanical systems – their shuttle. They had circled the moon in approximately one day’s time. Judging by their pace, the teenaged Jedi was hardly surprised. As they neared the boarding ramp, Qui-Gon spoke to him again.

“Well, Obi-Wan, was this trip beneficial for you?”

“Yes, Master,” he replied with a new sense of enthusiasm and understanding. He knew there was still so much more to grasp, though. So much he didn’t quite understand. He also knew it would take several more trips and lots of practice to come close to the expertise his Master showed.

“But I do have one question,” he continued. “What were those dark patches of the moon that I couldn’t feel while we were on our expedition? It felt as if something was blocking its connection to the Force and did not exist.”

Qui-Gon thought for a moment and chose his words carefully. His apprentice had taken great strides in such a short time, but it was best not to overload him with information.

"That, Padawan, is an adventure we must save for another time.”

Rumor: Star Wars: Reclamation Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Speculation has been swirling recently since Dave Filoni confirmed new animated Star Wars projects are in the works. Now TheForce.net is reporting that a poster on the IMD message boards, who claims to be a former Lucasfilm employee, has posted a document with character descriptions and overviews of an animated series titled "Star Wars: Reclamation".

The Poster claims: "might be talking about this. we'd been working on details of it since early last year but didn't know the details until a few months ago. got the greenlight in january but stopped everything when the layoffs hit.... i could probably get in trouble, but oh wait, i don't work there anymore... who knows if this is the same project though, everything was dicey"

The story takes place 15 years after the battle of Endor with the Rebellion/Republic struggling with a continued Civil War with remnants of the Empire. Leia Organa is mentioned as "Vice chair" to "Supreme Chancellor Mon Mothma" but the familiar characters end there. The document goes on to describe two Jedi named Sky Bonteri and Evyn Aoka, a teenage criminal named Kala Calrissian and a Mandalorian called Manco among others. Han Solo & Chewbacca are not mentioned, but a character called The Shade who's described as "Armed with nothing but a Lightsaber and an astromech droid... clad in black...", Luke Skywalker anyone?

You can check out all the pages from the document below:

Now this could very well be fan fiction for all we know so take all this with a massive grain of salt. Regardless, it is intriguing. We will keep you updated on future developments with this story. In the meantime, we want to hear from you! Is this a joke? Or could this be the next Star Wars animated series?  Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook!

Update: The good folks at RebelScum.com made contact with Lucasfillm Spokeswoman Tracy Cannobbio who confirmed that Reclamation is not real. Stating: "This is something we've never seen before."

5 on 5 Roundtable: Star Wars: Awakening

Welcome to a special THURSDAY edition of the “5 on 5” Star Wars Roundtable! I will be attending the Star Wars Weekend on Friday and so I am bringing you this edition today. A special shout-out goes to the Star Wars “Geeks of the World Unite” group on Facebook for supplying the panelists. In addition, we are joined by Mark Cristobal, author of Artoo Detoo: Droid of a Kind. Our topic this week is the novel, Star Wars: Awakening. Enjoy!

1) Fact or Fiction: Khian is the new Han Solo.
Yvonne: Fiction. Hmm… I never thought about him like that. He was always a person of his own and I didn’t compare him with any other character of the Star Wars Universe. So for me he is not the new Han Solo, he is Khian, and that’s good so!!
Blaine: Fact. Make that fiction, in a superior sense. Han Solo was a shoot-first, luck-of-the-draw type dude, relying more on flukes than on actual skill. Khian on the other hand was immensely superior to him, as he was actually trained in the use of his weapons. Little more gruff, less well-kept, and I really would NOT want to come onto his bad side.
Alida: Fiction. Although Khian is a total badass there can only be one Han Solo <3....Khian is very mysterious and interesting and maybe even a bit sexy, he has some "luggage" which makes him somewhat grave. He has his blade "Alanna" and is probably better skilled in combat .Han on the other hand is also a total badass, but not grave at all!!He tries to make the best of each situation and makes jokes about it. In short: Han is sexy and he knows it!!!!
Mark: Fact. On a certain point of view, at least for me. Two different guys with different backgrounds and era, not to mention different Star Wars dimension. In the case of Awakening, then yes, Khian may well be the Han Solo of this wonderful re-invention saga. I don’t see them comparable in terms of role or personality but on their basic symbolism, the spice in the mixture per say. These are two tough men with colorful and very interesting background struggling in the universe to find their lost purpose of existence.
Darryl: True. While there is not a one-to-one correlation, Khian shares many of Solo's attributes, as well as creating a similar dynamic in the storyline. The quick wise-cracks, the mysterious background, and the knack for being in the right place at the right time are very Solo-esque. He's the anti-hero demanded by any saga worth its salt.

2) Phantom Menace Padme vs Awakening Padme, who wins?
Yvonne: To be honest, I wasn’t a big Padme fan before I read SWA. But the Padme in SWA got my sympathy, because she actually has more fire and spirit in her and also an emotional side that is not overdone! That’s how I like women!
Blaine: Awakening Padme, because she actually picked up a blaster and killed stuff besides brainless blocks of metal.
Alida: Awakening Padme will beat The Phantom Menace Padme in a hart beat!!!I was never a fan of Padme (sorry..) but Awakening Padme is much more confident and powerful than TPM Padme. She knows what she wants and goes for it, even if it means breaking a few rules ;) TPM Padme is (to me) a nagging indecisive girl.
Mark: Not exactly a fair match, TPM Padme is a teenage first-time Queen whose world is under siege while Awakening Padme is a planetary senator whose scope of authority and power leans heavily more on legislative areas than that of a Queen Padme’s monarch rule. Awakening Padme has the edge; her character is older and more mature.
Darryl: No contest. Awakening, hands down. If you'd named her Leia, I'd have accepted it without a blink. None of the overwrought ceremonialism of TPM, but all of the political intrigue, Awakening's Padme was smart, tough, in over her head, but up to the task.

3) True or False: The absence of Jar-Jar Binks is noticeable.
Yvonne: True. It made my heart crumble, that Jar-Jar wasn’t the main character in this book! *lol* No honestly, that was one of the best things in this book! I wasn’t annoyed with any character!
Blaine: True, though not necessarily an improvement. As I have admitted before, I don't hate Jar-Jar. However, the addition of other characters pretty much covered for him. Again, not in a bad way, as I know David Gremillion particularly hated him.
Alida: True. I was not annoyed at all so I noticed he wasn't there. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Gungan city and the fact that it was under water but Jar-Jar was to annoying. It was a nice idea of Mr. Lucas to want to add a comic relief, but it had been better if it had been a Han Solo-kind of humor.I was glad there was no Jar-Jar icky-pooing all over the place in Awakening.
Mark: False. I didn’t notice his absence because he is not needed. Besides he’s a Gungan local of Naboo, Padme here is an Alderaanian Planetary Senator. Unless of course if you consider imagining Jar Jar Binks as a Caamasi. That’ll entirely rebuild his persona because the Caamasi are a peaceful and contemplative species.
Darryl: False. Jar Jar WHO? He added nothing of substance to TPM - other than marketing profits from the cute-factor contingent in GL's audience - and I didn't even give him a passing thought as I read Awakening.

4) Most intriguing new character is?
Yvonne: Khian of course! I loved this character the first time he appeared in the book! His comments made me laugh, and he is a really interesting character in this story and Im looking forward to Book 2 and hopefully we get to know him even more! I mean who didn’t wish to have such a friend and bodyguard like him?
Blaine: Issic. Looking forward to seeing more of him. He reminds me of me, actually. Reserved, temperamental, but still commanding, if I'm reading his character right.
Alida: The most intriguing character would be either Khian, Aiya Rios or Felic Ordon. It's hard to decide, I like all three of them!!. Khian is mysterious, strong and sexy, what’s not to like? Aiya is a badass pilot; don't forget she almost beat Anakin while she isn't able to use the force! But.....Felic is my favorite. He is a bad guy, I know, but he fascinates me! I was always curious what he was up to and why. I was very much intrigued by his character and his motives. And don't we all have a "dark side"??
Mark: Major Issic. Who is this guy? What powerful connections does he have for him to be involved in such grand yet secret project? His role in Awakening could pique enough curiosity and generates enough mystery that he could very well be depicted in his own solo novel trilogy.
Darryl: I'm going to take a left-turn here and nominate: Anakin. Although he goes by the same name, the Anakin of Awakening was a completely new, different, and most importantly, a believable character. This is an arrogant, immature, conflicted guy I could definitely see going to the Dark Side with the proper enticement. Although not evil, necessarily, his self-centeredness and narcissism peg him as a bad choice to be given a position of power and authority, and I'm looking very much forward to see how his decline and fall play out.

5) Biggest difference between The Phantom Menace and Awakening is?
Yvonne: Good dialogues and the characters were authentic. And Darth Maul got was he deserved: a bigger and badass part in SWA!!! Hehe
Blaine: Maul had more lines, and was not some mindless killing machine. Missed Qui-Gon a bit, but not too much. And the addition of Khian and Issic was pretty amazing.
Alida: There are many differences between Star Wars Awakening and The Phantom Menace. One of the most significant to me is Darth Maul. Danger radiates from him, you just know he is evil. And he could speak more than two words!!!I totally loved the fight scene between him and Anakin where he tries to seduce Anakin to come to the dark side!!!I also liked Anakin and Padme being around the same age, it makes the romance more credible. But, believe it or not, Anakin still is a nasty piece of work!!!
Mark: Everything! Anakin Skywalker starts out as a young adult, Padme Amidala is a Planetary Senator, Darth Maul is… well… different, Obi-Wan although still somewhat that same persona is still different. Awakening is a fresh path for the beginning of the first saga. It’s like entering a forked road before reaching the main road that was the Original Trilogy. On one side was Phantom Menace and the other was Awakening. Each a unique experience and both leads to that immortal epic space opera that was the Original/Classic Trilogies of Star Wars.
Darryl: The Phantom Menace was visually stunning, but an uneven story, not consistent at all with so many elements of the OT. They've been pointed out endlessly already, but I won't rehash them here. Awakening presents a scenario which is perfectly in keeping with the canon as laid out in the OT. I have yet to find a single aspect of it which I can't tie in to the original story, unlike TPM. Take Gremillion's story, apply $100 million in CGI, and you've got a REAL Episode one, worthy of the franchise.

This article is an opinion piece and represents the views of the writers, and not the entire Star Wars Underworld organization.

Interview With 'Star Wars Awakening' Author David Gremillion

By: Benjamin Hart

I had the opportunity to talk with David Gremillion, author of "Star Wars Awakening", an alternate take on Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Be sure to download his novel (It's a great read!) and check him out on Facebook.

Q. What inspired you to write Awakening?
A. I feel that a great number of people felt disappointed in The Phantom Menace. Not that the acting was poor or that Jar-Jar was there, but that the story itself left so much to be desired. It really brought up more questions than it answered. Sure, the CGI was mind-boggling, but even Lucas said that "special effects are just a tool" to aid the story. Star Wars fans felt they deserved more quality substance and less flash. Awakening ties the two halves of the saga closer together and answers those questions. It gives the readers a solid story with some great twists while maintaining that Star Wars “canon” feel.

Q. For those who don't know, how is Awakening different from The Phantom Menace?
A. Awakening is different on several key points. First, there is no Jar-Jar Binks at all. There is still a comedic element to it, but the humor is closer to the witty quips of Empire Strikes Back than the slapstick of The Phantom Menace. Second, Phantom Menace had Naboo, an unknown planet, with a questionable blockade. I replaced it with Alderaan, a planet Star Wars fans know and love, and bring in a stronger villain for Senator Amidala to face off against. Also, Anakin is older and a starfighter racer with dreams and ambitions of his own. He is very close friends with Owen Lars, who has dreams and ambitions of his own. Finally, I give Darth Maul the larger role that fans were looking for. The Phantom Menace portrayed him as little more than a mindless killing machine. Awakening gives him depth, motivation, and a voice (literally and figuratively) that was lacking in the movie.

Q. Do you think this re-envisioning is a more probable alternative? Do you think that this is a more acceptable plot since a large number of fans were mostly disappointed in the prequels?
A. The answer is really up to my readers. I like to think of this as a more solid foundation to Anakin and Padme’s beginning. The Phantom Menace disappointed so many and really stretched a few things to the point of disbelief. Awakening doesn’t go out on so far of a limb, but keeps the story grounded in a plausible and believable story. My characters have clear motivations and fiery personalities that you can root for. All in all, it’s a solid beginning that fans can enjoy.

Q. Obviously committing to writing, not one, but three novels is quite the undertaking. Did you have any writing experience before hand?
A. Amazingly enough, I just sat down one day and started writing. My brother and I had often complained about how disappointed we were by the Phantom Menace and my wife got sick of hearing it. “Why don’t you do something better?” she quipped one day and so the journey began. I have done some writing since then, some Star Wars, some original. I currently have a suspense/horror novel in the works that revolves around a haunted children’s hospital. Sounds like fun to me.

Q. In 'The Empire Strikes Back' Obi-Wan insinuates that he was Yoda's Padawan at one time. With the introduction of Qui-Gon in 'The Phantom Menace' we found out that wasn't the case, much to many fans' dismay. Why did you decide to keep Qui-Gon in your novel?
A. To be fair to Lucas, Obi-Wan’s exact words were “…you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me.” I was right there with my hand raised saying “Ummmm, what?” when I saw Qui-Gon. As we saw in Attack of the Clones, it appeared that Yoda “instructed” quite a few Jedi. In Star Wars: Awakening, I only had a brief mention of Qui-Gon for a couple of reasons. First, to pay homage to one of the better actors in the movie. Second, to show that Obi-Wan was his own man. He had been a padawan, but now Obi-Wan is a true Knight of the Republic and stands is able to make his own way in the galaxy.

Q. Anakin Skywalker is depicted as being much older in your novel than he was in 'The Phantom Menace'. Do you think this set-up is more convincing? Do you think that him being a young adult makes him more susceptible to the temptations of the dark side of the Force?
A. I think it gives him a greater range and flexibility. Luke Skywalker in A New Hope was someone that everyone could sympathize with. We’ve all been at that age and felt trapped, wanting to break out and do our own thing. Putting Anakin older than a nine year old kid allows him to make his own choices, to feel love for Padme, and to really shine as a character. Being older doesn’t necessarily make him more susceptible to the Dark Side, but the lack of training and discipline will hurt him. From the Phantom Menace to Attack of the Clones, Anakin had roughly ten years of Jedi teachings and he still couldn’t be controlled. That seems a little odd to me compared to Awakening’s Anakin that, like Luke, is eager to flex his “muscles” and prove himself. To make him similar to his son will only enhance Luke because the son will not fail as the father did.
Q. You removed Naboo and gave us Alderaan and Cerea, why?

A. Naboo seemed to come out of left field and left us with four metric tons of questions. What did the Trade Federation get out of the blockade? Did Palpatine/Sidious promise them something for doing this? Why do they elect royalty? Why should the audience care about a planet they have little or no connection to and only see for about one-fourth of the movie? We had no connection to Naboo. Alderaan already has special meaning to Star Wars fans (Alderaan shot first!), but we didn’t spend a lot of time there. I wanted to strengthen the ties between the prequels and the original trilogy so Alderaan was the logical choice. After reading Awakening and you see Alderaan destroyed (by Tarkin himself!), the emotional connection is stronger.

Q. The Darth Maul here is different from the one you are familiar with. This one is more… conversational compared to the one in the film and the EU. His fierceness and abilities are more defined if not deadlier. What other comparison could you make out of him here in Awakening and on the film, and which one do you prefer more?
A. The Phantom Menace’s version of Darth Maul was plain, stale, and boring. “I wear black and have a red blade, so we must fight!” What was worse was that they killed him off far too soon and gave us additional villains with no background. We had Vader for IV, V, and VI. Why not Maul for I, II, and III? I wanted DM to be far more than just a killing machine. I wanted him to have purpose, motivation, and some mystery. What is he like? Why is he following Palpatine? It can’t just be as simple as “I’m Sith, you’re Sith, do as I say”, there has to be more to it. Maul was, arguably, the most underused character in the saga and he deserves more.

Q. What can you say about Major Relian Issic? Is there something more in him or is his purpose as clear as daylight?
A. This character is, by far, the most mysterious character I’ve ever written. Major Issic is cunning, ruthless, and has revenge on his mind. He’s also involved in two of the greatest twists in the entire book. As if that wasn’t enough, he and Anakin are linked in several ways that become painfully clear in Episode II. I wish I could go into greater detail about him here, but I don’t want to spoil it for the readers.

Q. Khian is this type of tempered steel, wrought to toughness and strength by the power of hardship and conviction through pain and sufferance. Do you think that his strong personality and character could prove to be a real competition, or even a threat, to Anakin Skywalker who was supposed to be the default/designated love interest of Senator Padme Amidala?
A. That all depends on a few things. Khian clearly had loved a woman before and, somehow, it all went horribly wrong. He puts on a very tough front, but that man is hurting inside. He’s strong, yet vulnerable and even he is unsure if he can love again, but isn’t Padme worth it? Meanwhile, Padme is looking for someone. She’s taking on some incredible responsibilities and no one likes doing a big job by themselves. I mention several times that her greatest fear is being alone. If Khian is always there and Anakin is off meditating…

Q. Can you give us any hints as to what's coming in the next two novels?
A. If we throw out the obvious (Jedi Order falls, Palpatine becomes Emperor, Anakin falls to the Dark Side) then I can offer up a few tidbits. There’s definitely more the Major Issic than meets the eye. My remake of Episode II will see larger roles from Jango Fett, Yoda, and I’m proud to introduce the Jedi Battlemaster Cin Drallig. As in Episode I, the sequels will take us to worlds rarely explored in the Star Wars Universe. The end of Episode II will certainly leave more than a few people breathless with the cliffhanger and I can confidently say that Episode III will not disappoint. In that novel, it’s not a question of “if” events happen, but “how” they happen.

Q. Any plans for the future?
A. I am happy to have my first book signing at the Star Wars Weekend on June 8th at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Anyone can bring a copy of my book, the cover, or their favorite section and I will be glad to sign it for them. In addition, Star Wars Episode II is nearly completion and should be hitting the internet in July or August of this year. In the meantime, I have artists working on teasers for Episode II that should be hitting Facebook in the next few weeks. Stay tuned and May the Force be With You!

Fan Question From Ahsoka Tano:
Would you, David, ever be interested in sending books via mail to HUGE fans who cannot make the Star Wars Celebration?
A. An excellent question and one I've been hearing more and more! Unfortunately, CVI is too late in the summer for me to attend. However, after my book signing at the Star Wars Weekend on June 8th, I will consider sending signed copies of my cover out to fans and readers that request them. I cannot send out whole books as that would kill my poor printer. Thanks for reading and get ready! Star Wars Episode II will be coming out this summer!
