Disney Discontinues Production On 'Disney Infinity'

By: Benjamin Hart

Today we have some sad news on the gaming front. It has been announced that production on Disney's action-adventure sandbox game Disney Infinity has ceased and the game franchise has been discontinued. Disney Infinity has been well know and beloved by Disney fans of all ages for bringing together a host of different characters from many Disney properties including Pixar and Marvel. The newest iteration of the game, Disney Infinity 3.0, was released last year and introduced a plethora of Star Wars characters and maps to the franchise. According to reports, the developers had even more playsets planned, including some Star Wars ones, most of which sadly will not make it into production. Senior VP and GM John Blackburn released a statement earlier today and had this to say regarding this surprising turn of events:

"From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game."
"Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it."

He goes on to reveal that three new characters from Alice Through The Looking Glass are due for release later this month, along with a Finding Dory playset coming in July. These will be the final retail releases for Disney Infinity, sadly.

Reasons for the cancellation seem to come from a downturn in sales. Kotaku reports that Disney CEO Bob Iger said that while the first Disney Infinity game was successful, sales subsequently went "downhill". It also appears that the developer behind the game, Avalanche Software, is also being shut down.

The dust has barely settled after this year's San Diego Comic Con and we're already looking ahead to the next convention.  The D23 Expo, Disney's own convention, is coming up August 14-16 in Anaheim, California and Star Wars will have a major presence there.  It had already been announced that The Force Awakens will have a presence there (though what we'll see is somewhat up in the air), but now we know that Star Wars gaming will also be a feature of the convention.  Disney will be hosting a gaming presentation in Hall D23 (the former Celebration Stage) and both Star Wars: Battlefront and Disney Infinity 3.0 will be among the headliners at the presentation.
According to the official press release,

BURBANK, CA – July 13, 2015 – D23 EXPO 2015 will feature the biggest Star Wars™ and Disney video games in a special presentation in the signature 7,500-seat Hall D23 theater and in Disney Interactive’s pavilion on the show floor.

In the Hall D23 presentation on Sunday, August 16 at 11 a.m., fans won’t want to miss never-before-seen gameplay, trailers, new reveals and surprises from Disney Interactive’s most anticipated games. Among the games participating in the presentation are: Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, Star Wars™ Battlefront™ from Electronic Arts and KINGDOM HEARTS III from Square Enix. Disney Interactive will showcase more Star Wars characters and Play Sets new to Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition and provide the entire audience with limited-edition giveaways exclusively for Hall D23. Electronic Arts will give guests an in-depth look at Star Wars Battlefront, the authentic Star Wars gaming experience coming November 17. Square Enix will also bring special guests and surprises to Hall D23 to reveal new information from KINGDOM HEARTS III.

In the Disney Interactive pavilion on the show floor, players can experience the latest and upcoming titles through hands-on demos, innovative interactive experiences and premium giveaways for all guests.

•  Players will join forces with Star Wars, Marvel, Disney and Disney
•  Pixar characters in Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, the next chapter in the best-selling "hybrid toy / video game" series. Guests will have the chance to play some of the new Disney Infinity Play Sets, Star Wars™ Twilight of the Republic, Star Wars™ Rise Against the Empire and Disney
•  Pixar's Inside Out, and the fully enhanced Toy Box mode. Pavilion guests will also be able to visit the “Only in the Toy Box” Experience. Using a new augmented reality technology, fans can step into a virtual Toy Box environment and interact alongside their favorite Disney, Disney
•  Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters found inside Disney Infinity. Disney Infinity will also be giving away thousands of pre-release Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition figures featuring popular characters from across The Walt Disney Company (while supplies last).
•  Pavilion guests will also be able to live out some of their Star Wars battle fantasies by going hands-on with Star Wars Battlefront.

This sounds like it will be a can't miss panel for Star Wars and gaming fans at D23.  The D23 Expo takes place August 14th-16th at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Star Wars Rebels Characters Coming To Disney Infinity 3.0

By: Benjamin Hart

While a multitude of Star Wars fans anxiously await the release of Star Wars Battlefront, a newly revealed game has been turning some heads in the gaming community. Disney recently announced that the newest iteration of the increasingly popular sandbox adventure game Disney Infinity will feature of a plethora of Star Wars characters, vehicles and locations. Edition 3.0 is set to launch this fall with a starter pack titled "Twilight Of The Republic", which features many characters from The Clone Wars era such as Obi-Wan, Anakin, Yoda and Ahsoka Tano. Last week it was announced that another playset, titled "Rise Against The Empire", is coming later this year as well and it will include locales and characters from the Original Trilogy, such as Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie & more! And today StarWars.com had yet another surprise for us, revealing that a collection of Star Wars Rebels characters are being added to the mix!

StarWars.com's Dan Brooks interviewed Lucasfilm's brand creative director Hez Chorba who had this to say:

“Star Wars Rebels was decided really early on... It’s an important part of the saga and our entire team is proud of the stories being told in the series. That’s when we got to, ‘We need these characters.'”

Be sure to read the full interview here, where they continue to discuss the game and how the developers translated the characters into the Disney Infinity style. And speaking of characters, the playset will feature four of the main Rebels cast members; Kanan, Sabine, Ezra and Zeb. They also tease that there's much more to come from Disney Infinity's Star Wars lineup. Hopefully we'll see Hera and Chopper included a future release! And who knows, perhaps some characters from The Force Awakens will make it into the game before long?

Be sure to check out the video below that shows off some gameplay with the Rebels heroes in action:

Star Wars Officially Announced as Part of Disney Infinity 3.0

By: Dominic Jones

We've been hearing about this for a while, but Game Informer has finally officially confirmed it, Disney Infinity 3.0 will feature Star Wars characters and playsets.  The game will feature characters from all across the saga including The Clone Wars.  According to Game Informer,

"Star Wars fandom is often divided between the two trilogies, and Disney Infinity 3.0 is catering to both audiences. Avalanche returns at the head of development while recruiting other studios to work on specific packs and systems. Ninja Theory’s (Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword) pack-in playset, Twilight of the Republic, follows Anakin and Ahsoka as they fight to uncover who’s behind a freshly minted droid army. The story is set after Star Wars: Episode II, and it features land and space battles with plenty of melee combat. Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Darth Maul can enter the fray, too, as separately sold figures. Studio Gobo’s (Disney Infinity's Pirates of the Caribbean playset) Rise Against the Empire is a highlight reel of sorts that follows the events of the classic trilogy. Luke and Leia tangle with Darth Vader and his forces through memorable sequences, including the battle of Yavin as well as time on Hoth and Tatooine. Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Darth Vader figures will be available individually. Star Wars characters can cross over between the Star Wars playsets, too, which could lead to some canonically unsound (but fun) scenarios."

Check out the preview of Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars below,

This looks very cool and like it will be a lot of fun for kids.  I'm also very pleased to see the game is covering all aspects of the saga, including the prequels, originals, and The Clone Wars, whereas certain other games are not.

UPDATE: StarWars.com has also confirmed that a new playste will be available this winter that will tie in to Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens!

Star Wars Characters Not Joining Disney Infinity Game

By: Dominic Jones

A few months ago there were some rumors suggesting that Star Wars characters would be joining the highly popular Disney Infinity online game and action figure series.  Unfortunately, Disney has put an end to those rumors, for the time being.

In response to a question on the Disney Store Facebook Page about if Star Wars Characters would be joining Disney Infinity, the Disney Store Page replied, "there are no plans for Star Wars to join Disney Infinity at this moment in time."  The store was promoting a new Darth Vader figure/statue (it's unclear which) that will be hitting Disney Stores soon, when the question was asked if the figure was for Disney Infinity.

Would you like to see Star Wars characters added to Disney Infinity?  I think it makes sense and will almost certainly happen at some point down the line.  Let us know your thoughts in the comments, tweet us @TheSWU, or join the discussion in Club SWU on Facebook!

Disney Infinity, the sand box adventure game launched last year by Disney interactive, looks to be getting an upgrade soon. The game works with special figurines of different characters that, when placed on the "Infinity base", can be playable in the game. The system currently hosts an array of Disney and Pixar characters, but now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that that newer versions of the game are in development and they will feature characters from the Star Wars Universe, as well as Marvel.

This news come along with the report that "several hundred" Disney Interactive employees are about to be layed off, despite the success of Disney Infinity.

So, which Star Wars characters would you like to see made playable in Disney Infinity? Let us know in the comments below, or on Facebook!
