The first two teaser trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story have taken the Internet by storm this week, having offered us our first very first glimpses at the upcoming film. One of the more intriguing aspects of Solo is the Millennium Falcon and just how different the ship looks in the film.
Some earlier leaks had tipped us off about some changes to the Falcon, and the trailers confirmed them with some quick clips, but nothing too clear. Thankfully, on today's episode of The Star Wars Show, hosts Andi Gutierrez and Anthony Carboni offered up an unobstructed, 360 degree view of this "new" Millennium Falcon.
An additional compartment has been added to the front of the Falcon, covering the classic forward mandibles to give the ship a sleeker look. In the video, Andi and Anthony explain that this version of the Falcon was heavily inspired by early Ralph McQuarrie concept art for the ship. Specifically, the upward facing radar dish and single canon blaster turret are taken straight from the original artwork, seen below.
I really like how this film is presenting a very unique version of the Falcon, which, to me, looks even cooler than the classic look. Thanks to the trailers, and some new photos from Entertainment Weekly, we also got a look inside the Falcon, which is breathtakingly clean and sleek. It's really starting to look like Lando took way better care of the Millennium Falcon than Han ever did.

My question is how in the world are they suppose to explain the ship changing so much in the future?
ReplyDeleteHan says it himself in Episode IV: "I've made a lot of...special modifications myself. But we're a little rushed, so if you'll just get on board, we'll get outta here."
ReplyDeleteAustin, the ship is not a main character therefore they do not feel the need to explain anything when it comes to equipment. As the YT-1300 light freighter came in various formats, there is and will not be a need to explain how the ship became so modified to achieve the speeds it did. Over the course of the movies, characters seeing the Millennium Falcon see it as a ship that has been modified past the point of functioning, hence why it has been called a "hunk of junk" or "garbage". (think of a kid in your neighborhood who has watched too many Fast & Furious movies then tried to modify his own Honda Civic. Looks like trash, might move forward, but not much to look at.) Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteWell in A New Hope Han does say he made quite a few special modifications. And in Empire Strikes Back Lando does ask what Han has done to the Falcon.
ReplyDelete"She might not look like much but she's got it where it counts" - Han Solo.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Han modified it so that rather than the cargo being carried on the interior of the forward cargo hold, it's carried externally by the forward mandibles we are familiar with. This would be so that he can easily jettison the cargo when Imperials stick their noses in his business.
