Thrawn is so calculating. He even removes his own incompetent staff
ReplyDeleteHe already kind of HAS become villain of the week...he's always floating around, but the only reason he hasn't already won is deliberately letting the Rebels escape more than once, which makes not an ounce of sense given that his goal is wiping them out efficiently. The only reason pre-reboot Thrawn would have done that would be to track them back to a central base to crush them there. No such tactic here.
ReplyDeleteThe overall problem with putting Thrawn in this series is that you know eventually he's going to lose, because the rebellion still exists in the movies. This is the guy who nearly knocked out the New Republic after it was already established and had way more strength and resources than the Empire; here, they're tiny, and he has the full resources of the Empire. And he's toying around and being the boogeyman without actually feeling like a threat. He just feels like someone we've been *told* is a threat...
You make very good point. However, that the Rebellion still exists when "Rogue One" and "A New Hope" come around doesn't change that this Thrawn is only just beginning as a Grand Admiral at this time. Perhaps his "job" is to slow the Rebellion and not utterly defeat it. That could play into the Emperor's overconfidence ala Hitler going against his own Generals' ideas? Maybe Thrawn leaves the Empire altogether because of its incompetence. Maybe he is sent away because he's too hard to control yet too brilliant to eliminate.
