Not too long ago, rumors began to swirl about massive reshoots taking place for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. According to the rumors, not only would a large portion of the film be reshot but the reshoots would alter the tone of the new film from that of a war movie to one that better matches The Force Awakens. Though many of the reshoot rumors were debunked, no one associated with the production had publicly spoken about them, until now. As part of his Rogue One coverage this week (which also includes the confirmation that Darth Vader would be appearing, new pictures, and the reveal of a character from The Clone Wars being in the film), Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican spoke with director Gareth Edwards and Producer Kathleen Kennedy about the rumored reshoots.
Edwards said,
"I mean it was always part of the plan to do reshoots. We always knew we
were coming back somewhere to do stuff. We just didn’t know what it
would be until we started sculpting the film in the edit".
Kennedy added,
"There’s nothing about the story that’s changing, with a few things that
we’re picking up in additional photography. I think that’s
the most important thing, to reassure fans that it’s the movie we
intended to make."
Kennedy also addressed the tone of the Star Wars Stories (also known as Anthology films) saying,
"One of the things we’re doing with these Star Wars stories is
embracing the uniqueness of the different genres, and we’re very
deliberately leaning into the various styles of directors that we’re
approaching so that each of these movies will very intentionally have a
very different tone and style from the saga films."
Along the lines of making the films stylistically different, a question that has been raised about Rogue One and the other Star Wars Stories is whether we can expect classic Star Wars elements like the opening crawl. Kennedy was asked about this and her response was non-committal, saying,
"We talk about that all the time. It’s something that we’re right in the
midst of discussing even now, so I don’t want to say definitively what
we’re doing. The crawl and some of those elements live so
specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of
discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars Stories separate and apart from the saga films. So we’re right in the middle of talking about that."
It's been discusses at length how reshoots are simply a part of the film making process and are no cause for concern, however it's always nice to hear from the filmmakers about it. As for the crawl, personally I hope they choose to include it. I understand the desire to make the Star Wars Stories different from the saga films, however I think the crawl is one thing that should remain consistent across all the films.

ReplyDeleteI don't think an old-timey war coverage intro would work for all the anthology films, but a quick quote before each one like they did in Clone Wars would be a nice touch; I actually think getting away from the crawl with the anthology films is a good way to help further differentiate them from the saga films...I mean, look how many people wondered where Finn & Rey were in the Rogue One trailer...

ReplyDeleteReserve the crawl for saga films only. It's a perfect device to tie them together. Find a new device if necessary to set the scene at the start of the anthology films.

ReplyDeleteIn the past many star wars-related products such as videogames fan films and even parodies (Spaceballs) have incorporated the classic crawl, but it has never been a rule (greatly demonstrated by the Clone Wars). As an old die-hard fan I wouldn't mind if they presented an alternative way for the beginning of the movie, since I kind of think of Rogue 1 as a "fan-made movie" but with the main twist of being completely official. That alone should be an incentive to try new things.
If people cannot understand this is not episode 8 & need a new crawl then they have more problems. They are obviously not SW fans. The Crawl is SW, they have had it for years on all media. Why stop now? Do to a few morons who cannot figure out what movie is what. All Disney SW movies are basically fan made movies also.
ReplyDeleteWhen l took a friend to see Phantom Menace, she thought she had just seen the story of Luke Skywalker as a young boy. I think hardcore fans will always get it though casual viewers will not.
