With all the focus on the new chapter of Star Wars history with the release of The Force Awakens and the amazing new cast that brought us, it's still interesting to look back on Star Wars history and see how it may have been different. At one point during the casting process for Attack of the Clones, actor Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the role of Anakin Skywalker, which ultimately went to Hayden Christensen. DiCaprio spoke with Short List recently about that decision.
Via Short List,
Were you in talks to play Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels?
I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that as well, yes.
What happened?
Same scenario (laughs).
He wanted you, but you didn’t fancy it?
Um, right. Exactly.
Why?
Again, just didn’t feel ready to take that dive. At that point.
DiCaprio also spoke with Short List about turning down the chance to play Robin in 1997's Batman and Robin and the chance to play Spiderman in 2002's Spiderman for similar reasons. It's interesting to think about what the prequels might have been like had DiCaprio taken the part, for better or worse.

i'm going to say... it's not hard to get a better performance that what we have with Haiden. Anything better was awesome.(DiCaprio is better in all ways possible)
ReplyDeleteI believe his reason is a lot like Harrison Ford. Mr Ford has long said he hated looking back at his Han solo role and was the hardest star to come back. It's one of those things that stick and tend to define an actor. But it worked out for all of us with Mr Ford.
ReplyDeleteIt might not with DiCaprio. We will never know. I loved the prequels and all other films. But I'm sure you guessed that.
Seems like he made the right choice. Look what it almost did to Portmans career.
ReplyDeleteOr Hayden Christiansen's...
DeleteI think people expected to much from the prequels the were never made to be better. But made to tell the story we all wanted to know. Just because it's hard to accept all the choices doesn't mean they weren't needed to connect a story that had to be told. When I was 9 yrs old circa 1979I read that there were 9 movies to complete the story and now there is going to be many more I AM NOT UPSET ABOUT THAT!
