JJ Abrams Discusses Deleted Scenes from 'The Force Awakens'

Warning: This Story Contains Spoilers from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  If you haven't seen the film yet, stop reading now!

After seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens many fans noticed that some shots from the various TV spot and trailers were not in the final film.  Abrams spoke about some of the deleted scenes at a recent Writers Guild of America Q&A.

Abrams said,
“As much as you try to kick the tires and write and shoot only what is necessary — no one wants to waste anyone’s time — when you’re in the editing room you realize, for instance, that introducing the character there actually diminishes their power.  Or, giving that information actually distracts you from what you should be concentrating on. Or, having that moment happen concurrent with that moment actually gets in the way of both — things like that.”

As for the scene from the second teaser where Maz Kanata appears to hand Leia Luke's old lightsaber (pictured above), Abrams said,

“That was a scene actually filmed, but we took out. At one point, Maz used to continue along with the characters back to the Resistance base, but we realized that she really had nothing to do there of value, except to be sitting around.

Lupita did film scenes on set for that sequence, but it felt it unnecessary. So we ended up leaving those things out.”

Hopefully we get to see that scene and others when the film is released on blu-ray next year.

  1. "The Force is calling to you... Let it in!"... Never got that line in the movie.

  2. I highly doubt the film will be released on blu-ray "later this year" given that it's late December and the movie just came out in theaters...

    1. Blu rays are a waste of money. Some new computers can't even play the dam things! And there's not much difference in quality anyway.

    2. The difference is huge. Also what does the fact that old hardwear can't play it have to do with anything???

  6. The whole damn cantina and Maz Kanata scene was entirely unnecessary in fact. That's the problem with the movie-- unnecessary characters come in and out and we have no clue as to why they are in the movie and the plot holes are rampant.

    1. People are going nuts over plot holes, when it's only 1 fucking movie in of a trilogy... IT'S NOT AN ANTHOLOGY SERIES, 2 more to come, of course there's going to be plot holes. What you want the entire story in the first movie. Did you want Darth Vader to fight obi wan and have obi say "oh hey look it's your son, oh and your daughter, hey Luke leia wave hi to dad." people are WAY over analysing this film as though it'd a stand-alone feature. This movie just like new hope was a shit load of fun, exciting fun filled adventure. This movie truly has resurrected the franchise, after lucas so very nearly destroyed it.

  7. there had to be a cantina scene or it wouldn't have been a complete remake of A New Hope.

  8. But it wasn't a remake, at all. Seriously where do people find all the BS to complain about

  9. I don't understand all the griping about Episode VII. Yeah, there were "holes" in the plot, or events and characters that left us scratching our heads. It's to have the audience leaving the theater chomping at the bit for Episode VIII. It's the first movie in a trilogy. If everything was answered in the first movie, how much would people be looking forward to the sequels?

  10. SW fans expecting always to get back that first feeling from the original trilogy. (which is not wrong). The second trilogy did not give that back... most of fans complained. I think The Force Awakens is pretty good at it, we got lot of similarities back that made the first trilogy so unforgettable. Now this is the problem for the critical ones... it's never gonna be good enough for many fans. But at least we got our new Star Wars film and another year to discuss our point of views about it :)
I must admit that I was very disappointed when I learned that the story does not follow the one we got from the novels. So much hard work of many good writers just flushed down the galactic toilet... but one thing I am absolutely happy about: There is NO singing in a Disney movie :D
