Last month saw the release of Star Wars #1, the first of many new Comic books from Marvel. Countless copies of that issue have been sold, which was met with critical acclaim, and today the second issue in the ongoing series, Star Wars #2, has been released. StarWars.com has provided us with our first look at four pages from the comic, which features an opening crawl and Luke Skywalker facing off against Darth Vader. You can check them out below, and of course, SPOILERS for those who have not read Star Wars #1:
This series is set between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, so it's very interesting to see Vader and Luke interacting, and fighting, before their fateful meeting on Cloud City. With only two issues under it's belt, Marvel's Star Wars series has already proven to be a worthy continuation of the Saga in comic form. If you haven't already, go pick up both issues #1 and 2 at your local Comic book shop!

One stipulation that Lucas gave the writers of Marvel comics way back in the 70s before Empire was that Luke would not face Vader. I tend to agree with ole Lucas on that one. Any confrontation like the one shown in this new comic takes away from the gravitas and meaning of the confrontation in Empire Strikes Back...In another page from this comic, I saw Han and Leia driving an AT-AT with Jawas... Serious cringe factor... As much as Disney or anyone claims that their stories are on the same level of the movies, they are not. It should also be noted that the EU was never on the same level as the movies and Lucas reserved the right to trump anything in the books at any time. It's cool that Disney is at least doing a good good job at keeping track of everything so there's no blatant contradictions in the new Disney canon, but it's pretty obvious at this point that these comic writers have free reign to write whatever they want with no real checks or balances. I think the best and clearest way to view it at this point is to consider the movies + the Clone Wars as "Lucas canon" and all the new stuff from Disney as "Disney canon" The EU was never canon... or should I say "Lucas canon" :)
ReplyDeleteThe illustration may be quality, but the premise is trash!
ReplyDeleteWhy would Luke confront Vader in a comic book nearly 40 frigging years after the movies release which explicitly shows us the first confrontation. People may buy #1, but this? Not so much. Calling this canaon is a slap in the face to star wars fandom. Pathetic!
