It's always a pleasure to hear from a Jedi! Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, has been making the rounds recently to promote his latest movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, and while talking to the L.A Times' Hero Complex the conversation, of course, drifted to Mark's next movie, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. We've heard Mark speak about the film several times recently, discussing his experiences on set and the massive amount of security surrounding Episode VII. This time, however, he had a message to fans who may be a bit too excited for the next installment in the Saga:
"I wish people would just relax. We’re not trying to play games with people. We just want to maximize their experience at the movies where it should be seen and not have it leaked over the Internet. Believe me, it will be here before you know it. Forget about it, that’s my advice. Look forward to all the summer movies. I’m telling you, it’s just a movie. These people that build it up in their minds like it’s going to be the second coming of, I don’t know what — they’re bound to be disappointed."
He then continues, discussing the different generations involved in the production:
"It’s exciting from the standpoint that it’s the first of the movies in that universe that’s conceived and directed by the fan generation. We’ve never had that before. Now, Larry Kasdan is one of the old-timers like us, but the captain of the ship is J.J. Abrams and he was a fan of the series, which I find very interesting. They’re going to have an input into how things are done in a way that was impossible in the more autonomous period of George’s [Lucas] reign. I hope it’s a hit!"
While it's hard to not to be incredibly excited about The Force Awakens, Mark's overall message is something we could learn from. Many fans ended up disappointed with The Phantom Menace back in 1999 because, admittedly, sixteen years of speculation and exceptions were hard, if not impossible to overcome. Now it seems a lot of fans may be doing the same for this film. It's fine to expect a good movie, but walking into the theater expecting to see the "best move ever", or something better than The Empire Strikes Back is a bit... much. Could it be the best Star Wars film? Or the worst? We don't know yet, so it's best to keep an open mind until we all see it on December 18th.

"These people that build it up in their minds like it’s going to be the second coming of, I don’t know what — they’re bound to be disappointed." That's what I've been telling these prequel haters all these years and I can't wait to see them also disapointed in ep 7...i'm going to relish in it...LOL
ReplyDeleteUm.......No. The prequels were very flawed films. They were painful to watch for much of the time, not from an over inflated sence of anticipation, but poor concept and execution. Period.

ReplyDeleteUm, the reason why the prequels sucked is because they were totally horrible; it was like they seemed like first draft of the script/storyline. I mean really? A kid jumps into a ship and says lets go left lets go right....now that's pod racing? Coupled with the fact that Hayden Christensen was so damn horrible in his acting.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but the first three movies were a joke. they were rushed, horrible acting in lots of areas; weak storyline and scripting. Gee no wonder why Lucas sold the company, because he would rather direct movies sitting from his chair instead of actually getting up and doing something.
Lastly, didnt the employees of lucas films state that they pretty much kept their mouths shut because they wanted a paycheck and were too afraid to tell lucas what they really felt about the garbage they were putting out?
Yeah okay.
Oh and i did not search or hear any rumors about these movies. So sorry, that theory is blown.
Oh and don't you DARE get me started on Jar Jar.

LOL. I love the prequels and apparently so do most people...that's why Phantom Menace is the 5th highest grossing film of all time when not adjusted for inflation and 17th when adjusted...thats why it has made over 1 billion in world wide sales and why it made an additional 100 million in the 2012 3D release...face it you guys are a minority and most people loved the prequels thats why they are huge finaincial sucesses...you guys only think you are a majority because you all cry together in the same lonely corner on the net...oh and you cry babies forgot to complain about Return of the Jedi...i know how much you love those Ewoks LOL
ReplyDeleteThe reason the prequels sucked is because George Lucas couldn't direct traffic, let alone a movie.
ReplyDeleteI find it funny that people hate on George so much. He is the reason the whole Star Wars Universe exists. He created a movie for kids in 1977 that blew up into a whole universe of books, toys, cartoons, and websites. He created a special effects studio that changed movies forever but yet all of the sudden he sucks!?! He created a movie for kids, the movies are supposed to be fun. Stop thinking they are going to be something they are not.

DeleteNehemiah, saying the prequels are good because they made a bunch of money isn't the way you really want to go. In that case Avatar is the greatest movie of all time. The Transformer movies were also highly successful. People tend to like crap. Lots of blockbusters do well. That doesn't make them good. The truth is the prequels are widely hated across the board. It is you that is in the minority. Sucks doesn't it.
