(Updated!) BREAKING: 'The Force Awakens' Trailer to Debut this Weekend in Select Theaters

By: Dominic Jones

After much speculation, it has been confirmed that the trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will debut this weekend, November 28, 29, and 30, in select Regal Cinemas this weekend. The theatre chain announced today that at theatres in nine US cities will feature the trailer in front of all movies playing.  The lucky theatres are:

StateCityTheatre Name
CAIrvineEdwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX
CASan DiegoEdwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
GAAtlantaRegal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
ILChicagoRegal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX
NYNew YorkRegal Union Square Stadium 14
PAWarringtonRegal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX
TNKnoxvilleRegal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
TXHoustonEdwards Houston Marq'E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX
WASeattleRegal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX

I have to say, this is an interesting way to debut the trailer.  I would have thought Lucasfilm/Disney would want as many people to see it as possible, and this doesn't seem to accomplish that (and no, I'm not just jealous because my home town, Toronto, is not on the list!)  Regardless, I think we are all extremely excited to see the trailer, hopefully it gets an online release this weekend as well!

UPDATE:  As expected, there has been some backlash to the whole 9-theaters-in-9-cities-in-one-country thing.  But there is still hope.  The team over Screen Rush are hearing that more theaters will be announcing their plans for the trailer later today.

UPDATE #2: AMC and Cinemark Theaters have also announced that they will be showing the trailer at select theaters, but no word yet on which theaters. Regal Cinemas appears to have jumped the gun on the announcement and has removed various posts about it online.
