John Boyega responded to fans' comments through a picture that he posted via Instagram on Saturday afternoon.
Star Wars fans had a glimpse into the 22-year-old actor's character in the opening shot of the first The Force Awakens teaser that was released on Friday. His character was seen on a desert-like planet wearing Stormtooper armor, prompting both positive and negative comments from Star Wars fans.
While the majority of the comments were positive, the few that were negative were inappropriate enough to bring attention to them. The positive comments revolved around the diverse cast of the latest Star Wars film and fans' excitement to find out that Boyega's character may be playing a Stormtrooper. Negative comments focused on Boyega's race, as people were unjustifiably upset that a black man was seen in Stormtrooper armor.
See Boyega's response below:
Countless Star Wars fans have rallied behind John Boyega and are eager to see the direction that The Force Awakens takes his character when the film is released in December 2015.

Sorry for all the hate from fans, as I see it just because a character is in Stormtrooper armer does not mean he/she is a stormtrooper. It looks like to me Boyega's character is escaping something and is running for his life. nobody seemed to care that Luke and Han where in the armer in "A New Hope" .
ReplyDeleteClones died out, the ranks were dominated by human enlisted troopers. It doesn't specify a color.... Not saying he's a trooper, but it is possible.....
ReplyDeleteWhy is it so difficult for people to wrap their heads around the idea of Boyega's character being a stormtrooper? Stormtroopers are not clone troopers....and the galaxy is one helluva big place to be all clones....especially considering Kamino is not mentioned after the clone wars...meaning it was probably shut down or destroyed. The clones had enhanced genetics to gestation and age quicker. Most 40 years after ep. 3 are probably long dead. I think Bodega rocks the armor. Can't wait to see what the true story is.
ReplyDeleteRemind me NEVER to use my phone again ...freaking "bodega" and "gestation." Lol
DeleteI think the production of clones stopped at the conclusion of the Clone Wars and anyone could join the Academy to become a Stormtrooper. Additionally, the Troopers in 4, 5, and 6 all had different voices, so obviously not all Stormtroopers were Jango Fett clones...
ReplyDeleteI never thought the troopers in the original trilogy were clones. That was something special during "the Dark Times" when the Republic was out manned by the Separatist's. He very well could be a trooper and there is nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who would take issue with it due to his race -could not be a "true" Star Wars fan, IMO. While I love to dwell in fantasy realms and may side with the Dark in fantasy. In RL I choose light!! Hate is a pathway to the Darkside! True Fans know better!
#theinternetisfullofstupid! #Boyegafan #"true"starwarsfansarenotracist!
His race is irrelevant. That opening scene is blown by his overacting. He's trying too hard to emote. Here's hoping it's just a glitch, or maybe I'm wrong. But it would suck if he turns out to be another Hayden Christensen.
ReplyDeleteYour comment is irrelevent. Your opening statement is blown by ignorance.
DeleteWe dont know what just happened. It is meant to set the tone for the teaser. With intense music. Duh.
Here's hoping you're just a glitch. Chill out judgy mc judgerton your comment is not as clever as you thought.
Seriously. If you have any doubts about this kid's acting skills you should watch Attack the Block. He's brilliant and it's what made me truly excited to find out he's going to be in this. Like Phil said we have very little context but it does look like he's on Tatooine or a similar desert area, which would cause a lot of stress if he's been running at all, never mind what from. Also don't forget even Mark Hammill could get pretty over the top sometimes.
DeleteNo one would care if he was a Twi'lek trooper. No difference in the SWU.
ReplyDelete@Jonathan Stewart- What if its something different?
ReplyDeleteWhat if you are a stormtrooper in service of the empire, who had eradicated the entire Jedi order and hunted everyone who has a connection to the force. Then while on a mission/patrol on Tattooine (maybe) you suddenly have an 'awakening' of your own force sensitive powers... I bet you would be pulling a face like that as wenn considering you know full well what will be coming for you :D
"There has been an awakening, can you feel it?"
We see 3 seconds of a helmet less Stormtrooper and OMG he's black! So what, Lando was black and he was ones of the coolest characters in the Original Trilogy!
ReplyDeleteJonathan Stewart, you are just surprised there is acting after having watched the lifeless prequels for too long
ReplyDeleteThe Empire was very indicative of the Third Reich. I mean hell, Storm Trooper even sounds reminiscient of the Sturmabteilung, or Storm Division, which was the name by which the brownshirts were known. I was a bit thrown by it as well, not because I object to the race of the actor, but just because it goes against some of the assumptions I had about the nature of Empire - I mean, they totally pull off the intolerant and supermacist suggestion. People's objections I think have less to do with racism and more to do with aesthetics. Not all of us have perfect faith in Abrams to pull this off, I know I don't
ReplyDelete@Cody Young.... nothing goes against the nature of the Empire. The Empire was racist but against aliens!!! Humans were accepted by it but not aliens. How can Star Wars fans ignore this fact still I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteSo for Boyega to be a stormtrooper is totally fine.
Yes the Empire is racist, racist against NON HUMANS. They believed that humans (whatever the colour of there skin, because we are all part of the human race) were the superior beings.
ReplyDeleteCorrection *their* skin, apologies.
DeleteFolks ... the empire was born out of an army of clones ... from jango ... a black dude ( Pacific islanders) ... they would have conscripted from all corners of the galaxy. Needed the numbers to control ... couldn't afford to be fussy ! Why would anyone think that they had to be white or any colour !
ReplyDeleteso sad about the racist crap towards a fine looking man(I'm white by the way)
ReplyDeleteI never said that Boyega couldn't be a stormtrooper I just saying he might not be, my thinking is he will be the new hero. For those who think JJ Abrams can't pull off Star Wars I can't wait to see that he does. I believe JJ will recapture what Lucas lost. It is A tease nothing really is meant to be revealed until December 2015 when we will find out what Boyega is truly doing in Trooper armer.
ReplyDeleteA few of my friends & myself have been joking about the lack of "color" in A New Hope and that you don't see black people until Bespin in ESB. Apparently this has been answered as skin tone was apparently hidden by armor. The only problem I foresee is the inevitable racists who will say "the bad guys are always black"
ReplyDeleteLuminous beings are we, not this crude matter.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing the empire discriminated against was non humans and women. Grand admiral Thrawn and admiral Dalla were only a handful of exceptions.
ReplyDeleteA long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....
ReplyDeleteNo one gave a damn about Race....
Why would you with thousands of other Aliens, humanoids, and creatures running about...just another drop in the pot.
I'm very confident that there's more to Boyega's character aside from wearing a stormtrooper uniform, and I can't wait for his character development, aside from the rest of the main actors. Besides, what color was Mace Windu?
ReplyDeleteI'm Die Hard Long Time Star Wars Fan I Grow Up With The Original Trilogy Back In The 80's But J J Abram Is Right Now Not Pleasing Hardcore Fans He Not Following Star Wars Lore He Making it Look Like Game Of Thrones In Star Wars Universe He Gave A Sith Character A Clay More Broad Sword Light Saber What Is He Thinking The Light Saber Was Not Spose To Look Like A Clay More Broad Sword.
ReplyDelete"Hardcore fans" know that many different styles of sabre exist, and the sabre in the new teaser is a legitimate version in the starwars universe.
DeleteAnd as for the ones out there saying it wouldn't work because another sabre would cut through the metal on the crossgaurd...nope! There are a few metals in the starwars universe that are resistant to a lightsabres plasma blade.
DeleteHatin already.. you losers need to get a life.. just fkn chill & enjoy the adventure.. hatin already is just sad

ReplyDeleteIt isn't bad, after the Republic fell, the Empire started enlisting troops. They still cloned but not as often. So a black stormtrooper isn't inaccurate.
ReplyDeleteSo, its all good.
