Rumor: All Six Films to be Released on 3D Blu-Ray

By: Dominic Jones

Here's an interesting rumor.  Our friends over at Jedi News have picked up on the fact that Amazon now has listings for all six current Star Wars films for 3D Blu-Ray!  (They also have listings for Episodes VII-IX on regular blu-ray).  No release date is given.

This would be an interesting move by Disney/Lucasfilm.  The plan to release all the films theatrically in 3D was cancelled after the Disney sale, with only The Phantom Menace getting a 3D release in early 2012.  However, we do know that work was completed on Attack of the Clones (it was screened at Celebration Europe in 2013, with three screenings filled to capacity with many fans, including yours truly and fellow SWU team member Ciaran, being turned away), and work was being done on Revenge of the Sith (which was planned for October 2013 release).  All that to say, so it's not too much of a stretch to think that the prequels could get a 3D blu-ray release, but it's the original trilogy blu-ray release I find surprising.  This would mean that either, work on the 3D releases continued in secret or is being started up again for this release.

I do think that a re-release would be a fun way to promote the sequel trilogy, with first look featurettes or easter eggs.   Recall back in 2004 when the Original Trilogy was released to DVD, it included a special preview featurette about Revenge of the Sith (this featurette was recently re-released on the official Star Wars YouTube channel).  Also, the recent Marvel Blu-rays have included preview featurettes for the next Marvel films.  This idea would fit well with both Star Wars and Disney history, and if this rumor is true I would say it's a very real possibility.

The one issue that throws all of this off is, the fact that 20th Century Fox stills owns the distribution rights for the films, so Disney might be hesitant to do any re-releases (this is part of the reason, I believe, that the 3D re-release were cancelled in the first place).  Fox might be able to release the already completed work on the films, but it seems unlikely (granted I don't know the full extend of the contracts between the two companies regarding Star Wars) that they would be able to convert the rest of the films without Disney's blessing.

Keeping all that in mind, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney!

  1. The cancellation of the 3D, the Clone Wars, and the closing of Lucasart are the reason I will hate disney star wars for the rest of time. Episode 7 would have to be the greatest film of all time to change my mind.

  3. I care! For those who appreciate and have 3-D set ups, I speak for us all, bring it! I will sell my current SW blurays and pick up the 3D versions, day 1. EP 7 was KILLER in iMAX 3D and IMHO the only way to watch it.

  5. I'd buy it too! That's the nice thing about the 3d Blu rays. They usually come with the regular Blu ray. Whatever version you want to watch, you're set!

  8. Disney are not releasing it in 3D until later in the year apparently, as they try to fish more money out of us hoping we'll buy it twice!
