(Updated) New Star Wars MMORPG Coming Soon?

By: Benjamin Hart

Could a new "Massively multiplayer online role-playing game" be in development? After the announce that his company would be shutting down several online games, including Clone Wars Adventures, Sony Online Entertainment(SOE) President John Smedley hosted an Ask Me Anything(AMA) on Reddit. One person's question lead him to give a very surprising answer:

Cranks0:
If you could relaunch a shutdown title which one would you pick and what would you do differently this time?

John Smedley:
SWG. I would do everything differently.
SWG PLAYERS - OUR NEXT GAME (not announced yet) IS DEDICATED TO YOU. Once we launch it... you can come home now.

Well, that escalated quickly. It sounds like Star Wars gamers are in for a treat. Even thought he didn't really confirm it as a Star Wars game, I think it's implied. The real question is; will this be a relaunch/reboot of Star Wars Galaxies, or will it be a brand new game in the same vein? Galaxies was shut down at the end of 2011 after an eight year run, leaving many angry fans behind. A game like this, which could tie into Star Wars Rebels and/or the Sequel films would be a fan pleasing addition to the franchise. We look forward to an official confirmation of this game by Lucasfilm!

Special thanks to Club SWU member Paul R. for bringing this to our attention!

Update: John Smedley has tweeted about this and he confirms that it is NOT a Star Wars game.

  1. This will NOT be a new Star Wars game, as EA has exclusive rights to all new Star Wars game that come out, do some research about this...

  2. What will then happen to The Old Republic? It doesn't really affect the canon as much, but all this cleanup of the EU is worrying!

  3. Raymond - If they came out with an MMO set in the same basic time period that Galaxies was set in, I don't see how it would have any impact at all on The Old Republic. They would be taking place millenia apart, but like Bob said, I don't think this will be a Star Wars game or anything like Galaxies. Why would they have shut down Galaxies just a couple short years ago to start over again on another Galaxies game? It wouldn't really make sense.

  4. EA doesn't have exclusive rights to Star Wars titles. Disney has withheld the rights to multiple categories, including online games. That said, dedicating a Star Wars title to Star Wars fans is a repetition of task. It's doubtful the new title will be set in the Star Wars universe. More likely it will simply contain SW related easter eggs.

  6. They're building a sandbox MMO without the Star Wars license, which EA has for the next decade. He said it's "dedicated" to SWG players, for them to "come home" to. It'll feel like SWG, but no Star Wars.

  7. As has been mentioned, SOE are not working with LA, so this wont be a star wars title. Smedley was referring to the debacle that was SWG combat upgrade. The game prior to the combat upgrade (referred to as pre-cu) was arguably the most in depth, complex and fantastic MMO ever. The combat upgrade significantly changed all aspects of the game, and led to what was called the new game enhancements (or NGE for short). NGE was a WoW clone set in the star wars universe and everyone hated it. It took away what was unique and unusual about SWG and replaced it with a game that was already part of most peoples game library. The controversy was that even in the face of 90% disappointment of the players, SOE still proceeded with the combat upgrade, they did not listen to the players, instead they did their own thing and it went wrong with majority of players leaving and feeling let down. It would seem that Smedley has learnt from his mistakes and is now going to capitalize on the fact that he had a great game and threw it away for the sake of not knowing the player base. I would assume that this new game, will be focused at pre-cu players and I would suggest it will be set in a sci-fy world, not unlike star wars.

  8. What I don't understand is with all the clamoring over SWG (Pre-CU) why would'nt someone pick it back up. Further, Smedley has flat out squashed ANY concept of SWG returning.... WHY? If there is a a demand why not supply? Add SWG fans + Star Wars fans that want to leave SWTOR = a decent pile of folks. Finally, the basic data is out there in a deep vault at SOE ... why there is not effort to bring SWG back is baffling.

  9. it is proberbly the complete swg game either, pre cu or post cu if not nge.. however, maybe instead of a jedi with a lightsabre its a david with a lightsword? or a spartan with a godlike sword.. tough id hope it was a futuristic space mmo .. i wonder if its just swg with a different - skin.. same game diff name . tbh, yu could pick a billion film titles out there and get a good one, its not starwars i know.. but still.. anything is better than wow and swotor if its swg based game

  12. Unknown to most, except a few hardcore SWGers: the top SWG admins accounts were all hacked and info posted online for all to see. Secondly, there was a user named "Causic" from the SWG forums secretly facilitating an 80 BILLION credit transfer thru multiple players on multiple servers. The SWG black market was going to become unstoppable if it had not been shutdown. These are some of the top reasons for the shutdown. SWG became uncontrollable.

  13. I love how it turned out to be a stupid zombie game that had nothing to do with Star Wars and was just a survival game.

  14. Maybe the SWG vets who liked the Quarantine Zone theme park on Dath would like it. It was not for me.

  15. Simply put, the people in charge don't give a rat's ash about the people that play the game. If they did SWG would still be here and they wouldn't have screwed the game up. What you get is a bunch of developers that get it in their crazy mind to fix what doesn't need fixing! Additional content=good move. Change the entire game=pissed of paying customers. And until makers and developers come to that realization, they will fail their ultimate goal of making money for the parent company.
